Where Can I get the Canon EOS utility for a 400D ?

I'd like to put my owner's name in the exif of my pics and I've just read it is done by using canon's eos utility.

So I went searching for it and found a list of names on canon's page that didn't show eos400d.

So I went searching for alternate names and found it is the Rebel XTi in USA.

So I went back to that page and....   the XTi isn't listed..  !

Can anyone help.

I did a search on "canon eos utility europe" and found this:

https://www.canon-europe.com/support/consumer_products/software/eos-utility.html

The 400D is listed in the pop-up list of supported products.

[edit] check AshleyMC who got in before me, I searched Canon USA but looks like she got a better answer from Canon Europe.

EOS Utility 1.0 was introduced with the next generation after the XTi/400D.

Before that Canon had an all-in-one ZoomBrowser. Good luck finding an install download for it. From Canon USA support page, I found manual for the latest version (v6.7, January 2012), but no download for the program.

Thank you both for your posts.

I thought we were on a winner there but quickly found it wasn't.

I tried a few more that I might be able to get by with: win7, xp.... nope...

I'm on win10.  64bit.  but usually 32 bit stuff runs, too.

perhaps there's another way?

Re: Where Can I get the Canon EOS utility for a 400D ?

The EOS 400D, called Digital Rebel XTi in North America and EOS Kiss Digital X in Japan, is an entry-level digital single-lens reflex camera introduced by Canon on 24 August 2006. (Wikipedia)

I doubt that one can now get any meaningful Canon software or support for a camera model that is 14 years old.

That was around the time of Windows XP. (I held on to XP until my upgrade to Windows 7 in 2011.) Even if you could get a hold of a copy of some old program, it may be unlikely to be compatible with Windows 10.

Anyway, this is a screenshot of what I saw in my browser at this link:

I get page not found at that link. I'll try a proxy. Get back to you about results. Interesting.

I have messages Canon about it. Friday. Heard nothing yet.

Thing is they list the software for models bracketing the 400D.

edit:

Well I tried from Sweden and from the USA and couldn't find a listing for it.

Then I searched for the 'digital solutions' software which got mentioned somewhere and couldn't find it, either.

Where are you located?  I wonder if that makes the difference.

You couldn't download the software and make it available to me, could you? It seems to be about 35Meg.

Sorry, my friend. My posts above were all I could do to help you. Good luck!

Make sure you set the OS at the top to Windows 7 (x64), the EOS Utility should show up near the bottom of the list.

Now that I look at it again, it says "EOS Utility 2.9.0 Updater for Windows", so it may require an existing version to be installed.  Not sure, but worth a try.

Re: Where Can I get the Canon EOS utility for a 400D ?

Yes, thanks for that.  I see it now.  And we have a win7 computer we can try it on. The message online is a bit confusing.  It says the software installs and updates: does the two things - and then later says that you have to have it there already.

So like you say, it's worthy a try but it won't be a total surprise if it won't work without a previous edition.

You'd think they'd give a link to the original prog,  really.

I'll try.   Thanks.

If I remember, an update only. One should have CD from camera set. Later, register the camera may help, if still possible.
To OP: try to search this exact forum, there was some offers to share the SW.  I doubt I find my CD anymore. Maybe some newer  version could work with 400D, too.

Re: Where Can I get the Canon EOS utility for a 400D ?

I now have it.  But I've lost track of where I got it from.   Had a couple of false starts - things I downloaded that didn't work - one didn't go at all,  as I remember and another said not compatible with this camera (the 400D) but I've now got a version that works fine.

I like it.  It saves me pulling the card out all the time and I don't like pulling CF cards because of the myriad of tiny pins -  I've had a couple of card readers get bent pins and become useless and I'm always worried about it happening inside the camera slot.

It saves them in day by day folders and I find that convenient, too.

I was thinking of maybe starting a thread about organising your photo downloads.

Because with numerous Canon cameras all making photos with same naming conventions I think,  and numerous CF and other cards producing yet another series with potentially the same numbers it gets to be quite a trick keeping them all apart.

And that's another benefit of the eos utility.  When I upload manually from the card I have to go through checking to see how much of that card has been uploaded so far...... the utility does that for me.

So it's good.  I'm glad to have it.

And now my photos are 'signed',  too, with the owner label of my choice,  which is what I first wanted.

p.s.  so , yes, if anyone has good ideas for photo organising I'd be happy to hear.  Inclusion of a methodology for the conversion from .CR2 to .JPG,  too, that's part of the problem,  ease of doing that and disciplined storage of the produced .jpg's.

I find I can't just hand the task over to digital photo professional.  I have to select the photos I want to convert and then if I've selected unwisely it'll protest about my selection leading to saving with identical filenames.  And it won't proceed.

So just that little step in the process could use some facilitation.
