Pentax *IST D

Hello everyone -

I got a Pentax *IST D in good condition.

Does anyone know the max CF storage this camera accepts? I put in a 4GB card but it still says insert CF card.

Also, does anyone have a parts unit forgotten in a corner as the CR 2016 button cover is missing in this unit. Many thanks in advance for your feedback and consideration.

When I had my *istD memory cards were measured in MB not GB!  My BIG card was 512MB at the time.  The CF interface is the same as SATA and I *think* that there is a version/compatibility switch over at 4GB (I could be wrong).  Try smaller like 1-2GB if you have one.

Parts... I found a source for used camera bit a couple of months ago but now I can not find the link.  I will keep looking.

The camera needs firmware update 1.12 to support CF cards larger than 4GB. its possible you may have a defective CF card reader. Also possible there was a CF technology change that it might not support.

The *ist D handbook (available from the Ricoh website http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/download_manual.html ... click on Discontinued Models) quotes cards up to 1 GB, but there is a firmware update that refers to problems with 4GB cards http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/20050225e.html... you may need a smaller-than-4GB card to apply the update

Re: Pentax *IST D

Thank you very much everyone.

I sure hope the pins are not bent but will check on the firmware update first.

Now, if I can source the button battery cover, that would be perfect.

Well i found a 128mb CF CARD and still no luck. Upon careful inspection it appears the last pin has been bent by previous ownership, i took the unit apart but there are too many soldered fine connections to make it worth a repair especially for the modest investment. Will keep it for parts since these are not as much in abundance as Nikons and Canons

There are two of the white solenoids that can be used to repair cameras like the K-50 with aperture block failure.  The second one controls the flash pop-up mechanism.

White solenoids are the valuable parts

Whilst you have it apart and not to be using it again why don't you take the two white solenoids from it which can fix the aperture block problem permanently on the K-30/K-50 and a few more models.

I bought a broken *ist DL2 and did the same to fix my K-30 and I have a spare.

You could even sell them, only one seller I know on ebay and they are expensive, about $40 or so.

Wow, if i was to sell it for parts this thing would more than pay for itself :). It was 8$ + shipping.

Wow, sorry to hear it's a genuine fault as these original *istD cameras are a treasure and not often coming available. Ii it possible you could access the bent pin with some fine tweezers to straighten it?
