Pen-F coming
8

I have finally succumbed... a used Pen-F is on the way (silver of course) and I am just checking if there are any particular issues I need to check. I don't recall anything, but am not as aware as I am for my other bodies (I never thought I would get a Pen-F). I will flash the latest FW (if it doesn't already have it).

I have put together a light, compact kit of lenses recently, and a recent holiday highlighted the fact that the smaller and lighter the better for holidays, and the feel of a Pen-F also puts a nostalgic smile on my face and puts me in "snapshooter" (relaxed) mode (I had an EP5 that I enjoyed in this way but I must have an EVF and the add on VF4 EVF destroyed the whole concept for me).

I also expect a silver "rangefinder" to get past security at events better, and attract less attention in a dark walk from a restaurant back to ones car, if you know what I mean.

Just picked up a Pen F off ebay about 4 weeks ago and love it certainly feel comfortable with it more each day, came with the oly extra grip as well which i feel is an advantage for me anyway.

Havent got a prime for it yet.....only the 12-40 and a couple of other zooms but for a prime im thinking a laowa 7.5 might be nice and something much wider than im use to.

Congratulations!

The base plate of the silver PEN-F seems to succumb more to scratches than the black one. If using a tripod, make sure you are using a mount with a rubber pad.

The rubber thumb pad came off on our silver PEN-F. Olympus stuck it back on free of charge but we had to do without the camera for a couple of weeks. Later I heard Olympus could send you a rubber thumb pad to stick on yourself. Should it happen again sticking it on myself would be my preferred option.

The om-d wrapping case is a good fit up to the 14-150mm zoom and will protect your PEN-F from scratches if you plunk it in a ruck sack or pocket.

Thanks for the info! As its metal, what colour comes through the silver if scratched?

That Laowa 7.5mm has interested me a lot for travelling, but I object to the price for a non AF lens that I have read quite a few QC issues about infinity focus adjustment. I know an Oly 7.5mm f2.0 would be even more expensive, but I think an Oly or Pana option would probably feel in many ways like you are getting what you paid for. If the Laowa was considerably cheaper, and I am watching out on Fleabay (unsuccessfully so far), I will try it out.

Congrats! You're going to love it!

Perfect companion to any prime lens. My favorite primes are 15/1.7 and 25/1.8 when I'm out and about on the streets of San Francisco - usually the 15 on PEN-F and 25 in my bag.

50% of street shots are in Mono-2 with low graininess. Color-3 for colorful settings like Pier 39. Of course, current situation sees zero photo activities

The Rokinon 7.5 worked nicely on my Pen F. Great little manual focus shooter that when backed off infinity just a tad kept every thing from your shoes to the moon in focus.

Is that for scanning the thumb grip which I believe is prone to falling off?

Thanks for the tips... I have read those two filters look good in practice.

Re: Pen-F coming

I love my Pen-F but found it difficult to use as a second body in alternation with my E-M1’s. The dedicated Exposure Compensation dial in addition to the twin dials was a recurring source of annoyance.

On an OMD I primarily shoot in Aperture priority, Auto-ISO, adjusting aperture with the thumb dial and EC with the index finger dial on the fly based on live blinkies. This does not translate well to the Pen-F for two reasons. 1. The EC dial is too stiff and awkwardly located to spin while the eye is to the viewfinder. 2. My muscle memory invariably responds to a need for EC with the index finger :^)

For someone who uses the Pen-F as their primary camera or who has more adaptable muscle memory than I, this may not be a problem. If you find it as problematic as I did, here is one solution:

One can redefine the EC dial to flash EC. Once this is done, EC becomes an option for the front dial. Bingo - the primary controls are just like my E-M1iii.

Stay well.

Thanks... I wasn't sure if magnesium or some other coloured metal was used.

That's a shame... I like using the in camera correction for framing, and then duplicate later in processing.

Leather half-case for PEN-F
6

I have a couple of leather half-cases that I use with my PEN-F.  I have had my PEN-F for 3.5 years and have used them the whole time.  Mostly I use them because they give just a bit more grip on the front (and add about 5mm to the height) and they weigh almost nothing.  I bought mine (tan and medium brown ones) on Amazon.  I think I paid about $15 each for them.
