Want to play with B/W Settings in Your Lumix Camera?
1

Came across this video and tried the first, more contrasty settings for jpg images and applied them to my GX7 Monochrome setting and they worked very nicely. (It's the first of the two setups he suggests.)

Every now and then I like to take a vacation from post processing and it's nice to get a nice b/w image straight from the camera.

I have used similar settings on my Olympus cameras for several years. I think that the Tone Curve is the main setting as it can make the difference between Black and White and Black and Grey.

One thing though, he mentions that the white balance is not important. I disagree. Adjusting the WB can make a little or a lot of difference. Try manually changing the K setting. Usually, though, I have mine set to Auto.

Would love if you could share more about settings that you've liked.

I'd like to find something for my Olympus bodies for b/w since I much prefer the Olympus interfact to the Panasonic's.

These are the settings I have as a custom setting on my EM5II. I have it on the Mode dial.

Monotone

Sharpness = 0

Contrast = -1

Filter = Orange

Tone = Neutral

Graduation = Normal

Tone Curve S = 0, M = +1, H = +5 (not all models have the Midtone setting e.g. my EP5)

Auto ISO; Auto WB; A = 0, G = 0; LSF+RAW

With these settings it will be very easy to blow the highlights, so you must have the "Blinkies" turned ON.

From the SCP, you can change some of these settings such as the filter colour.

Let me know how you find these settings.

Is the Shadow/Highlights adjustment on the EM10 ii where I would adjust the tone curve?  I've reprogrammed the top of the camera button to white balance, but could change it back to Shadows/Highlights if that is where I could apply your suggested settings.

I will definitely try out your suggestions.

Thanks.

Yes, this is how it is adjusted. Press the INFO button to select Shadows, Midtones (if present) or Highlights.

This combination gives black and white photos rather than black and grey.

All I see on the highlight/shadow graph which shows up on the Fn2 button on the em10 2 is highlights and shadows.  I adjusted them into an S curve to get a more contrasty image.  I can't see how to adjust all the parameters you suggested.

Re: Want to play with B/W Settings in Your Lumix Camera?

Are you pressing the Exposure Compensation button, on the 4 way controller, then Info to get to the Highlights and Shadows?

The numbers I mention are adjacent to the little graph that appears on the screen. Even my old EPM1 and EPL5 have those numbers, so, I would assume that the EM10II will have them also.

Adjusting the shadows is a matter of taste but be aware that when set to 0 (zero) the camera will still produce deep blacks.

Ahah!  Wasn't even aware that there was an explosure compensation button on the 4 way controller - nothing is marked.

Somehow for all these years I've been able to compensate without using that button!

I use exposure compensation all the time.  I'm usually worked in Manual so I just adjust either the shutter speed or aperture to get what I want!
