Look for posts by Avian2016.

Of the Panasonic Compact Camera Talk forum veteran users (Avian2016, Sherman Levine, DUBTEMPLE, Stevie Boy Blue, etc.) all have moved on to other long zoom bridge-type cameras; i.e., Avian2016 to SX70 HS, Sherman Levine and others to one of the Ninon Coolpix 9## cameras.

I have the FZ200 (and SX50 HS) mainly bought the FZ80 for the longer zoom length. Was hoping to use the FZ80 in lieu of the FZ200 and the R&R of the lens adapter/ TC.

But the 'overall' IQ of the FZ80 was noticeably poorer than the FZ200, and of course the SX50 HS's 12MP sensor.

Pro's of FZ80 over the FZ200 (and SX50 HS) faster overall operation/ AF speed. Far superior EVF than the SX50 HS.

Yes the FZ80 'can' provide 'good' IQ with the right conditions:
• GOOD Daylight Lighting (as lighting decreases, IQ decreases)
• Low ISO settings (which is difficult with the tele small apertures)
• Main subject (i.e., bird) 'FILLS' the image area

Would highly recommend reading several of the full F80/ FZ82 Reviews (e.g., Imaging Resource FZ80 Review HERE) that have full size sample images you can download and view on your system, as the majority of the FZ80 images I've seen posted are generally downsized to small resolution sizes.

Can also glance through a couple rather lengthy FZ80 Pros/ Cons threads HERE and HERE.

All depends on the intended use of the images. If one mainly wants small resolution images to share online, with good daylight and low ISO the FZ80 will be 'OK' for its' low price.

FWIW

Several FZ80 PP RAW images downsized:

Jon

Re: Has anyone compared the SX60 or SX70 to the FZ80?

Given a choice, I would chose the FZ80 over both Canon's mentioned. I played with the FZ80 and took a few snaps with it at my local camera shop and was impressed. Focus is FAST when compared to my SX50, Fuji SL1000, X-S1, Kodak AZ652/AZ901, and Panny FZ40 and FZ200, EVF is very nice, and it's ergonomics feel good. It competes well vs all the others. I do give a slight nod of improved IQ to the FZ300/FZ1000, but those are more expensive with less reach. All of these small sensor cameras get the job done, but if a pixel peeker on a big screen, move up the ladder to a larger sensor.

Flickr has lots of images from the FZ80:

Jon_T,  as a side question, I have noticed some posts showing a reference to another post  with a click HERE in blue.  I can't, with limited computer knowledge, ever do that and find it would be a useful tool.  Would you tell me how this is done in understandable language.  Thanks.

And more focus modes also on the Panasonics. You can expand a focus box to any size you want but with Canon it always seems to be 2 small in the middle or everything. You can of course touch focus but for things like BIF and aircraft not exactly convenient.

Canon seem to have been just treading water in focusing options since the year dot and just porting across their point and shoot facilities from camera to camera without a care. It is OK with a short zoom but I have found it extremely irritating with long zoom cameras especially with a telephone line running over my garden.

Possibly the SX70 has improved things but I doubt it.

I now have the FZ330 instead of the FZ80 but I have never really understood the animosity to the FZ80 that erupts on the Panasonic site but they are purist BIF people I suppose. I miss the 21mm wide angle and reach but then the FZ330 is just a different camera and good in its own way.

Fuji SL1000, X-S1, Kodak AZ652/AZ901, and Panny FZ40 and FZ200, EVF is very nice, and it's ergonomics feel good. It competes well vs all the others. Hi Don,

Did some searching through DPR, looked through the DPR's "FAQ", etc., and was not able to find anything on using the posting edit tools menu bar at the top of the post window/ box:

To insert a link in a post you use the "Insert / edit" from the edit tools menu bar:

Quick example, to insert a link to the DPR's FAQ

• Copy the FAQ from your browser's address bar

• Select the "FAQ" in the post, then click on the "Insert / edit" from the edit tools menu bar, and the "Insert link" dialog box will appear:

Since you had the "FAQ" from post selected it will be entered in the "Link text optional" box. (You can enter the text you want for the link)

Paste the link you copied for the DPR FAQ in the "Link URL" box ...

... then click on the "Insert link" button to insert the URL link to the FAQ in post; i.e.,

DPR's FAQ

Hopefully someone will read this and post the link where DPR explains how to use the Post editing tools.

Cheers,
Jon

You have been given good feedbacks & responses.

Personally, I think you would do fine with any of those three cameras.

From my own experiences with the smaller sensor cameras, to reduce the noise & increase the detail in the pictures, will need to reduce the sharpness & noise reduction settings.

Most of the cameras may need tweaking in the settings to produce better results, and may also need to go through a learning curve to get the most from the camera.

In my collection, I have the SX60 SX70 FZ60, but not the FZ80. And have not enough experience with my "used" FZ60 to provide any meaningful feedback.

You can browse through the below threads to see pictures of the SX60 & SX70 cameras.

Hope this helps.

The FZ80 using the same lens as the FZ70, hence one could look at:
The "Best Superzoom 2014: Eight competitors, 2.5 clear winners" (HERE) includes the FZ70, SX60 HS, and SX50 HS in comparison shots.

Interesting that the older (at the time) SX50 HS overall IQ better than the SX60 HS and the FZ70.

Below one of my SX50 HS and FZ80 215mm (1200mm EFL) comparison shots.

FZ80 even with the advantage of being release four years after the SX50 HS, and the FZ80 image downsampled to the 4000x3000 to match the SX50HS 12MP, SX50 HS image has less image noise and better resolution of small details.

However as noted in previous posts, the FZ80's ergonomics and overall operation speed is far better than the SX50 HS.

Hence, if anyone interested in the FZ80 I would 'highly recommend' to taking the time, reading, and viewing sample images at several of the full F80/ FZ82 Reviews to see if the FZ80's image quality 'good enough' for your intended use of images;  e.g.:

It was going over to those stock Sony 1/2.3" high 16-18-20 megapixel sensors that put paid to compact resolution and performance across the board with a few exceptions. Crazy amounts to put in these small sensors. Interesting that Sony capped the 1" sensor at this level when going for quality for the enthusiast.

The main market goes for these high pixel counts and as the sensor supply dried up these mass consumption creatures are in the main all that is left.

For the more specialist FZ330 Panasonic probably specified their own sensor as does Olympus for the TG-6 which is probably a big seller.

You would think Canon could do better having no high quality super zoom apart from the ageing G3X but there is talk of them even abandoning EOS M so probably they are just cruising and milking the low end market while they can with the bare minimum input and no in house sensor development, just off the shelf in compacts.

I suppose in many ways the SX50 was the last real Canon super zoom and the original G5X the last real Powershot G series camera and the new stuff is the equivalent of some anodyne modern grey car churned out with no distinctive character probably all made from the same shared parts bin.

Thanks for posting those photos. I so much prefer the images from my SX50 over those from my SX70 that I was considering replacing the 70 with an FZ80 -- but the images from my SX70 are closer to the SX50's than those you show from the FZ80. Yeah there's individual variation between cameras just like there is between each of us, but the exceptions are just that, exceptions to what we can usually expect from any model of camera. I'll stick with my SX50 for low light and use my SX70 for brighter times when I can keep the ISO at or below 200.
