Re: ***Weekly Wildlife Thread: Mar 22nd - 28th***

Thanks to both for your comments ... I know I'm pushing the limits with high shutter speeds and high ISO in the low light we've been experiencing lately.

I didn't really know what to expect when I pushed the EV up to +3 or more and while it did appear to move the Histogram to the right ... I don't actually believe it made any difference to the shots?

I was operating at M1 setting with shutter speed set as well as aperture and ISO  set to Auto with a max of 3200 [sometimes more] ... so I guess when you go to + 3  EV there isn't actually anywhere to move other settings?

Anyway it didn't do any harm.

Cheers

Well, one thing worth keeping in mind with the A99ii is that in S or A setting the maximum EV change that you will see in both viewfinder and histogram before taking the shot is +-3EV, anything higher won't show until you take the shot.
Older SLT cameras are generally limited to +-2EV before the change stops showing, think it's only A99ii and A77ii that can do +-3.

Caught me out a few times on the old A77 in very backlit conditions, roll on the exposure compensation to try and brighten a subject up, forget about the limit and the end result comes out way over exposed.

Lovely set.  The first is beautiful and the way the light comes off the wings is spectacular.

When I left Cambria, CA, I flew up to Portland, OR to visit my daughter and family for eight days in early February. The wildlife in that area is pretty abundant too. It was only a short walk from her place to Bethany Lake a few miles west of the city. Here's a few shots from my visit.

Song Sparrow

Male Red-winged Blackbird

Male Gladwall

Female American Wigeon

Sadly I missed eye focus on this, but I still like the pose - male RWBB

Male Anna's Hummingbird

Spotted Towhee a little obscured - male I think

Eastern Fox Squirrel

American Robin

Another male Spotted Towhee

Bushtit

Nice west coast shots Ed.

Another nice set Scott! Really like the Muted Swan stretching its wings - real nice lighting on those wings.  You are capturing a lot of large birds.

Three nice shots of birds not often seen here.  Amazing you are using a TC with the 500mm.  Really brings them in close.

Re: ***Weekly Wildlife Thread: Mar 22nd - 28th***

Thanks Ed,

yes it was quite a large distance and biking through the fields doens't bring the birds any nearer;

the combo of an A77II, 500mm and a 2x TC helped me to cover the distance

it is a nice lightweight combo, without the TC i can take pics handheld, with the TC i used a monopod to prevent shake/motionblur

Thank you very much Ed.  The Swan did decide to put on a show for some reason.  The back lighting really worked in that shot.
