Riva Zoom 135EX - Not loading film

I have a secondhand Minolta Riva Zoom 135 EX (Freedom Zoom135EX) that has a fresh pair of batteries in it that won't advance the film when I first load it. I know that it works because it has in the past, albeit with the same issue of loading film and some issues with the display. I took it to a camera shop the first time I wanted to use it and it took them about 20 minutes between the 2 of them. Does anybody have any tips about loading this camera? Are there any obvious things I could be doing wrong?

I'm a beginner to film cameras, so I'd really appreciate it.

I don't have your camera but I do have a Freedom Zoom 9T and a Freedom Holiday. I have never had any problems with loading film or film transport issues with either. Sometimes there have been cameras that instruct the user to have the camera either turned off or turned on when loading film and closing the back. You camera says to have it on.

Film loading is pretty straight forward with these, unless there is a problem with the camera itself. I'm guessing the battery icon shows full strength. You might want to check the used markets for another one. Neither of my cameras cost more than $6.
