A2 EVF goes blank

I bought the A2 immediately it was launched as a successor to the 7Hi and have used it constantly all round the world with success. Suddenly yesterday the EVF went off just as I was focussing. I have picked up from other threads that constant lifting the viewer through 90 deg to the vertical position can weaken the ribbon connector, but I have rarely had to do that. But it does seem that there is a ribbon connector and it is the likely culprit. Have others had this problem? Is it an easy fix?

If the ribbon cables already gone , it needs replacing .

The problem is that you can't get replacement parts easily .

You would have to be very skilled with a soldering iron to do a repair of the ribbon cable .

.

If your used to dismantling cameras and repairing then , you can do it if you have the parts or a doner camera to salvage parts from .

I have done this. I am pretty good at soldering, though. It takes a good iron with a fine tip, a razor blade or X-acto knife to scrape off the plastic from one side of the ribbon (and to scrape insulation from the wire), some 30ga or so magnet or jumper wire, and a loupe or high magnification Optivisor. Liquid flux is helpful, too.

I actually have a project that requires this type of repair right now (the eye sensor in a Sony NEX detachable EVF). It's on my eventually-to-do list, since that's not my main camera by a long shot, and the EVF can still be switched with the button.

This kind of soldering is an easy job for such as yourself , but beyond the abilities of most .

Even if they had the right equipment .

I'm quite sure if I attempted it I'd end up with a big hole through the whole ribbon cable !

I've a Minolta X700 I need to replace the capacitors on , a simple job I know .

But I need to brush up my skills on soldering before I do it .

I've got the capacitors ready and the kit to do it , just need a bit more practice .

And there a lot bigger than a ribbon cable , I know my limitations .....
