Any word on Classic Negative profile coming to X-T3?

And, I suppose Bleach Bypass for those interested in it.

I've read and heard all over the Fuji world that the lovely Classic Negative profile should be coming to the X-T3. I haven't seen any confirmation on timing for this, and with the recent announcement of the X-T4 with its new film profile, it got me even more impatient (because the important things in life involve arbitrary film simulations that I'll end up modifying in post anyway).

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the X-T3, X-Pro3 and X-T4 all have the exact same processor (X-trans 4 or something like that?) in them and the same sensor (a beautiful sensor it is, too). It would seem pointless to not give out a small firmware update including these two profiles to the "older" models (2018 wasn't that long ago, you know).

To make up for the lack of Classic Neg, I've just been shooting almost everything in Pro Neg standard, but not every scene calls for that color rendering, as we all know.

Pretty sure it's just filter - possible to create your own profile for Classic Neg. in Lightroom / CaptureOne Pro?

As many have mentioned multiple times in this forum, I think the new film simulations won't come to the X-T3 until the X-T4 has been out for several months in order to maintain a differentiation between the X-T3 and X-T4. Eventually I think the X-T3 and X-T30 will get it though. Probably this fall or winter. Depends too on how long the X-T4 is delayed.

This was my understanding as well. The X-T3 is supposedly going to get the autofocus improvements that the X-T4 is getting, and I’m guessing they will also update the X-T3 with Classic Negative at the same time. Last I heard it was going to be this summer, but with the release delays it might end up being fall.

Anyone know if these film sims are coming to the X-T3/30? So irritating of Fuji not to do this.

Re: Any word on Classic Negative profile coming to X-T3?

Probably not coming. It seems as though Fuji's marketing strategy for their newer cameras is to adopt new film sims in the new cameras and withhold the new sims from the older cameras.  It makes sense if you think about it.

There is also the element of the research required to confirm that any new additions would be compatible with the older cameras.

Even still, I think Fuji is more reasonable with kaizen than other manufacturers, so I won't complain about not getting the newer film sims in my older cameras.

Also, although cumbersome, there are workarounds where you can use the newer film sims with the older cameras in post.

It’s not coming. Kaizen doesn’t mean new features for old models found on newer ones. Fixing bugs is one thing. To add a film sim is not only doing the film some but everything that operates within that logic and menu. Just because it’s the same sensor and processor doesn’t mean the rest is the same. Sure it’s doable if the hardware is the same, but at what cost?

You can apply the film sim in capture one though. Classic Neg shows by default. Others can be added through a slight copy and paste rename hack.

Guess I will go for the XE4 then. Shame, the XT30 looked like a beast.

This is precisely why they opted to withhold new film simulations from kaizen updates,  film sims helps move newer models

I have several Fuji cameras. Whilst Classic Neg is cool and I’ve had some fun with it, I would never choose a camera based on whether it had a film sim or not. At the moment I’m using my X-H1 the most. It doesn’t have Classic Neg.

The X-T30 is quite a different camera design to the X-E4. If the former is the one you would like the most, then buy it and find some way to hack Classic Neg in post (eg change the EXIF data). Like a lot of Fuji users, you’ll probably end up experimenting with different SIM’s both native and created. It’s part of the fun of Fuji...

It is not a filter. It's such a deep science of color that you can't even replicate it in an edit program.

That isn't exactly true. The author of that article said it can't be done in Photoshop. Agreed. However Capture One and Lightroom both apply the film sims to RAW files, and do a pretty good job at it. I'll admit that sometimes I like the look of the JPEGs better but I can get pretty close with Capture One. Fuji has obviously worked with both. I don't know the in and outs of the film profiles in software but its more than a filter.

Omar, with some comparisons.

I too wouldn't buy a camera based on film sims, and I really love Fuji's jpegs.

Fuji rarely adds newer film sims to older cameras.

But its not all bad, you recently received a very nice AF update.

sure, it is easily done using software like 3DLutCreator - what you need is to pickup raw shoots of the same targets under the same illumination (for example from Imaging Resource) done w/ you camera and with the camera from which you want to "steal" the Film Emulation... do conversion for example in C1 of both files and then using resulting output 3DLutCreator can created a camera profile for C1 for your camera that will emulate the output of the camera you don't have.

https://www.3dlutcreator.com/

PS: no "deep color science" - just old good copy & paste.

the author has absolutely no clue what he says ... you can output demosaicked data w/o any color transform performed (even w/o any WB applied) into TIFF file (for example using a raw converter like RPP), get it into PS and apply whatever LUT you want there to that data and assign whatever color space you want...

That is a great site but unfortunately older Fujis can't save WB shift etc so it would be a more difficult / annoying  setting up recipes...I believe only xt4, xpro3, x100v, xs10 & xe4 has that feature.

They have the Nostalgic Negative recipe on Fuji Weekly which I'm currently trying out.

If you save the custom setting name as "Ectachrome -3R -2B" then you don't have to remember the white balance shift for each custom setting. Using recipes on my X-Pro2 wasn't as simple as my X100V, but not all that difficult.

I agree. If I owned the X-T3, I'd be much happier about the AF update than a film sim.  But, I understand, because the film sims really are a neat feature set for Fuji.
