Shooting with nikkor Z 70-200 f2.8 on Z7
31

Good afternoon everybody!

I am trying out the nikkor Z 70-200 f2.8 & the Z 24-200 on Z7 & Z6....

While the weather is very bad, cloudy, strong wind and sometimes rain, I have not much shooting opportunities...

Underneath a picture taken handheld with Z7 & Z 70-200 f2.8 S with full size crop (as shown) as it came out of Capture NX-D after conversion from NEF. Set to vivid and sharpening 5 , ADL set to normal.

When Nikon released this lens, I had no plans to exchange my 70-200 F2.8 FL for the Z version. After experiencing the native sharpness, colour rendition, VR and focusing speed on my Z bodies though, I might change my mind ...

A screenshot of the scene and the cropped area as you see in CNX-D:

and a 100% crop, no PP applied with exception of © and exif paste.

Thanks for looking and kindest regards,

Stany

The nikkor Z 70-200 f2.8 VR S, early impressions
18

After my first trial day with this new toy, some early impressions...

  • Very well built to handle...
  • Extremely sharp. When I got my 70-200 F2.8 FL version on my D4/D810/D850 and later with the fantastic FTZ adapter on my Z6& Z7 I thought a final standard in extreme sharpness was achieved, especially wide open.... But... This one is sharper...
  • Very fast focusing on both Z6 & Z7.
  • Very smooth zoom ring
  • I like the new style illuminated info display on top, indicating per mm that you zoom, or aperture, or distance.
  • The Z version seems to be focusing at shorter distance than its F counterpart, but I'm not sure about that, I will compare tomorrow or so...
  • Last but not least, I LOVE the two programmable function buttons on this version.
I programmed the one in front for AF tracking, great... Now I can use the one on my camera body again for exposure...

Wow.

Kindest regards,

Stany

If you have time, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the relative speed of AF acquisition between the 70-200Z on a Z6 vs. 70-200FL + FTZ also on a Z6.  Is there any noticeable difference in not only the speed of AF acquisition - but also the manner in which it achieves AF lock?  Does one tend to hunt more than the other when shooting a average contrast subject against a bright blue sky, preferably in dynamic-area and wide-area AF modes?  Is equipment on loan, or were you able to purchase?

Aloha,

Roy

I will try to compare this, but my conclusion will be "impressions" while I don't have 2x Z7 or 2 x Z6 nor scientific equipment to measure AF acquisition time. I have Z6 & Z7 but they are different about number and size of AF points.

Kindest regards,

Stany

Thank you so much for this...any chance you would be willing to share a RAW file at 200mm and f2.8?

So excited for this. Have my trusty VR2 so it'll hopefully be quite an upgrade.

Hi,
I thought the Nikon Z 70-200 F2.8 was delayed and not available ?? Got my name on a waiting list here in the UK. But no signs of any update news from Nikon regarding the situation.

Update on shipping date?

Thanks for the report Stan!

The lens looks very promising indeed.

Any idea as to when it's finally going to ship?

Cheers,
Bernard

Good morning everybody!

For those who are interested to see a real life sample, full size picture for reasons of sharpness and the bokeh this lens provides OOC.

Picture taken handheld.

This image has been converted from NEF to jpeg in Nikon Capture NX-D. Vivid setting, sharpness 5.

No additional PP or sharpening applied.

Exif and © pasted in the image.

Thanks for your attention and kindest regards,

Minimum focus distance
1

StanyBuyle wrote:

It has variable minimum focus distance, depending on focal length, as per this quick report, which is less than for F version (which is constant).

"Well, without prejudice to the obvious differences in perspective and yield at the different focal lengths, this lens is built so that the minimum focusing distance progressively decreases as the focal length of use decreases, from a maximum of 1 meter to 200mm to a minimum of 50cm at 70mm. In this way, moving from the subject and meanwhile varying the focal length used, we can practically have the same level of magnification and framing.

If you look at the two snapshots above, Jessica's face completely fills the frame, despite being two completely different shots.
With the Nikkor F-mount 70-200mm f/2.8E FL lens things are different because the minimum focusing distance is constant (1.1 meters) as the focal length changes."
