EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS on a EOS R

I was wondering if any has been using the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS on an EOS R body with the EF-to-EOS R adapter.

Been trying to figure out what telephoto to get for my EOS R without dumping a ton of money on the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS just yet. Like this because of its reach and shorter length when in my bag. Also I have f/2.8 zooms for other systems so its not an immediate need.

So if your using this lease on an EOS R I'd be interested in your experience.

Thank you

Hi Steve!

I have no R but I have an RP since last may (after EOS 6D).

RP works fine with adapter and EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS.

Sometimes I use it with Kenko 1.4 TC.

Pic. 3 has been shot with Kenko, others without it.

I used the lens on R and it works very well. I shot video with the lens. I love it.

The 70-300 L works fine adapted to the R, just like other EF lenses. But I don’t like the balance on the R(P). The adapter makes it a strange frontheavy combo. A 70-200 f4 just balances much better. Apart from that it (the 70-300 L) does deliver.

Interesting, My original thought was to go get the 70-200 f/4L II because its a great lens for sure. When I thought about it more I said why not get the 70-300.

I do have the grip. Originally was not going to buy it because I wanted to keep this kit smaller but found a used on in like new condition for a great deal. I've typically always bought grips for all my prior Canon's and cameras from Sony and Fuji so I figured I could use it if I need it. Actually on mirrorless bodies its a must have if you want to use longer lenses IMHO.  So if I used it with the grip will that be enough you think to balance it?

The cheap eBay tripod things work fine for balance, makes RP perfect for me.YMMV.

Not sure if a grip will improve the balance. I use an L bracket that also extends the grip a bit. Still most weight is up front. The fact the 70-200 zooms smoother, the lens is thinner and the zoom ring isn’t in the front might contribute to better handling. I think personal preference is a big thing here, so maybe you find it less of an “issue”

Be carefull with cheap 3rd party rings. The one I have has worn off some of the coating.

Re: EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS on a EOS R

i had that combo and ended up selling it, for one reason only, and that is front weight imbalance with the adapter.  it just doesnt feel good holding that combo, however the lens operates naturally on the R.
