G90/95 to G9 real world experience only please
1

Hi I'm looking into getting either of these. The problem is I like the weight of the G90/95 but there's a good deal on the G9 + 12-60 Leica in the UK. So does the heavy G9 ( just 2 ozs short of my DSLR ) have enough for any one to trade up to from the G90/95. anybody done that? I know what the specs are but the real world experience is what I want to know about. Thanks.

It looks like no one has made that change/ upgrade, so it seem it's not a usual thing to do.

Having tried both, I decided to keep the G90 because it suited me and used all of my G80 bits such as battery and grip. I also like to advance my video techniques. The G90 has V-Log, and that was the deal breaker. The bigger size and heavier body won't be much of an issue if you have been a DSLR user. I got the PL12-60mm f2.8 as well by the way. But technically the G9 has a lot more features. So from that aspect it might well be the better buy for you if you are not coming from the G80.

I have added a second G9 because the camera is just so good and comfortable to use, you`ll love it.

There's a bit of uncertainty in this post for me. You state that you're looking to get either a G90/95 or a G9, yet are only asking for input from people who upgraded from the G90/95 to the G9.

I also had neither, but used the specs to make a choice. I'm primarily a stills photographer, but occasionally use 4K (or 6K on the G9) photo for times when extracting a frame from the video clip gives me the exact image I want.

For the type of photography I do, the higher burst rate & more powerful/flexible AFC, plus the additional control points, of the G9 made for an easy choice over the G90/95. I also rented a G9 kit for a week to make sure it would fit my needs, that I ordered one of my own before the week was out says it all.

I don't find the weight to be a big issue; the G9+14-140 lens actually weighs less than my previous FZ2500.

I have both cameras. The weight really isn't a big deal. I like the G95 because of its smaller size, but the G9 is more comfortable with larger lenses. The G9 has a better EVF, a larger variety of burst modes and more programmable FN buttons. The G95 has in camera panorama which the G9 lacks. One thing that I have noticed is that the G9 has better AF in low light and low contrast situations. I have experimented by switching back and forth using the same lens on both cameras and the G9 has significantly better AF than the G95. This is especially true when I use Olympus tele zoom lenses. I am sure that the lack of DFD when using Olympus lenses plays a part, but why the difference between the G9 and G95 I don't know.

You aren't providing enough information for anyone to provide an answer other than.  I really like my G9 or I really like my G90.

you have a set to requirements.  you have aspects that you want to "maximize".  some that you couldn't care less about.  other aspects you would find a balance.

So, what are you looking for, what do you shoot, your style. etc.

My background is I have many Lumix mFT G1-G7, GX1,GX8, G9, GM1, Gh2, etc... and a bunch of Olympus including EM5, EM1, EM1mk2.  Also many many DSLR.

Why are you considering switching from your DSLR to a Lumix mFT?  Are you comfortable with the trade offs?

Thanks for the replies everyone. Whiie  I was waiting for a reply I bit the bullet a ordered the G9 coupled with a great bundle deal (see my later post). It's arriving today. So now I've got o go through the choosing a bag to take the G9 coupled to the PL12-60 + Panny 25mm 1.7+ maybe my Nissin i60 flash + bits. This usually takes me months, I can hear my wife groaning I think.Lol. I'll have a look at David Thorpes book, thanks for that, although I came from  a DSLR originally I also have the FZ200 and FZ1000 lovely cameras in the their own right, so I may not need a book.
