A quick and short review of RP with RF 24-104 from a Pentax user.

Recently I bought a Canon RP with the RF 24-105 for travelling light(er) and it came with the adapter to EOS lenses (useless to me but it was free).

Also bought a K&F adapter to use Pentax lenses. Being mainly a Pentax user that came really handy.

Just took the RP with the RF lens out last sunday for some photos and here is my take.

What's hot:

1) Autofocus is wonderfull. Fast and acurate. So much faster than what I'm used to with my Pentax K-1. Fast AF is not that important to me but it I can't dismiss the huge difference.

2) JPEG colours are really nice that make think that RAW file will be for archival only most of the times.

3) Kit is so light that I had to check the bag several times to confirm the I had not forgoten it somewhere. Traveling will be a lot more comfortable.

4) Manual focus with old lenses using viewfinder is very easy (although the triangles of the R model seem to be even better).

5) High ISO (at least up to 12800) is very good by my standards. As good as the Pentax K-1 with famous Sony sensor.

6) So small it reminds me of the old film SLR cameras.

7) Hidden touchscreen. Love it! Now I don't have the temptation of chimping on every single photo.

And what's not:

1) Handling. Coming from Pentax the Canon handling is so outdated. It feels I'm back in the 80's. There is no Hyper Program Mode (the FV is a nice try not not quite there yet) that Pentax has since the 90's. There is no green button so to get back to full auto I have to go to the touchscreen or dial thought the whole range of values.

2) The zoom ring turns the other way around. It's not a big deal an not better nor worst, just different than what I'm used to. It will take some time to get used to.

So my final thoughts, with seven good and one and a half bad, are:

It's a great little camera that I will sell the day Pentax makes makes something like it (small mirrorless camera + 24-105 f/4 lens + adapter with AF). Until then (or when hell freezes over - whatever comes first) I'll be a Canon user.

I wish some day Canon can add a green button.

And what about video? I don't use it so I wouldn't know.

Luis

I’m not familiar with Pentax’s controls, but I take it that you would like to be able to switch back from manual to the equivalent of P mode by pressing one button? Pressing the down or left arrow button in Fv mode will reset aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure comp to auto. Is that close enough to what you want?

Luis, your negatives will fade away the more you use the RP.

The K-1 is a great camera for its limited range of what it excels in...a very nice "field camera",the RP is much more versatile(imo).Jack of most trades and very good,K-1 is a beast for what its good at.

In bad weather the K-1 just works!

Nice to see a fair comparison and review. I agree, Pentax does UI better than anyone. In face, the best UI I had experienced was on a Pentax 645 II cam. Simple and effective. But that was another era. With digital, well, you just have to get used to what the cam offers. No big deal for me since I shoot 99% of the time in either "Av" or "M."

Red became green

Yes indeed, the green button reverts from manual to P mode.

And thanks for the tip. I had changed the "arrows" to move the AF point (like I'm used to with Pentax) but your tip sent me back to the menu and found that I could assign the "auto" to the red (video) button that I never use.

Now I have a red "green" button. Canon handling is getting better (for me) by the day.

Agreed 100%

Still I wish Pentax would make something like the RP since I have plenty Pentax autofocus lenses.

I doubt anyone will ever make an adapter with aperture control and autofocus to adapt Pentax lenses to Canon R mount cameras.
