For those who can be interested in a such combinaison..awkward, i know...

Canon M100 ( i like very much the touchscreen af and shutter)

Smallrig cage (that gives a grip and more stability using 17-40L which is quite heavy)

Canon 17-40mm L F4

Result for sharpness

Not that this setup is bad but think the kit lens of 15-45mm or the 11-22mm would serve this body better than the 17-40L.

- The 15-45mm/11-22mm has IS which would give it extra stops of hand holding ability than the 17-40L. The kit lens even cover a more useful focal range.

- 11-22mm will give you actual ultra wide angle FOV on APSC - which was what 17-40L was meant to do on full frame.

- Better body to lens weight ratio, removing the need for the smallrig and make your whole setup more compact.

- IQ of 17-40 isn’t exceptionally better than the lens mentioned. 15-45mm has come copy variation but 11-22mm seems to be very good or even exceed 17-40mm in its intended usage (UWA).

Sorry, but if there is an  L-designated lens that shouldn't have a red ring the 17-40 is it. I agree that the performance to size/weight ratio doesn't carry its own weight on a small body.

I do like the Small Rig cage.

Wow. Looks like either you had a bad 17-40 or something else 😀

I agree. I own the 17-40 as well as the 11-22. I don't own the m100 but do own the M1, M3, M5 and M6II and would rather have the 11-22 on any of them than the 17-40. I have a good copy of the 17-40 but it with the adaptor to me is just a front heavy thing and the 11-22 is a damn good lens.

Pretty much matches my experience with the both copies that I owned, copy #2 was a bit better but with mushy corners on ff.

Optics is good. Not stellar. For the era this lens was introduced, for that period optics, it was considered as a great lens worth the money ir commanded then. Other than that - build quality, durability, etc etc is a proof it is worthy of L ring

Having said that if  one has budget, the newer versions of EF wide angle zoom perform better. And this is where again the strength of 17-40 lies. It is priced so reasonably now. Used good condition ones can be had for 300+ and new ones for 500+.

PS: I have the 11-22mm and for M that is what I use. The 17-40 is used on RP and A7 II. What motivated me to comment here is broad sweeping statements like it is not worthy of L ring.

SmallRig Cage makes the M100 a lot easier to hold for sure.  I put a hot shoe on mine.

Love it! I've been looking for this cage and that's what led me to find this post! If you'd be so kind to PM if you'd be into passing it along or have a spare or source, please let me know! I've tried to PM but can't yet. If not no worries and happy shooting!
