Super Zoom?
8

I was a bit apprehensive about the IQ from this 10x zoom lens but having been out and about yesterday evening in Llandudno (North Wales) in some challenging light, my apprehension soon disappeared. OK, not a pro lens but one I'm happy with for travel photography and will be using it on my EOS RP for my upcoming trips to Herefordshire and Norfolk in July and August respectively.

I'm a wedding photographer and use pro grade glass including a couple of primes. If all else failed, I'd happily use this lens at a wedding but would normally use it just as an all in one, walkaround/travel and am quite impressed with the IQ even at F/6.3 (minimum aperture at 240mm)

I keep hearing how many people love that lens. I'm glad Canon did a good job with it. for the money, it's not a cheap lens but i't not crazy expensive either. Canon requires a lot of software correction to make it look good on the wide end but who cares. All that maters is the finished image.

Like they say, the best lens is the one you're using. Thanks for sharing...

I'm not a pro so it not being a pro lens sure won't bother me. I've always had a superzoom for my aps-c cameras and I want one to go with my R.

How does 24mm on this lens compare to the 24-70/4 IS at you have in your gear list at 24mm?

Re: Super Zoom?

Not used the 24-70 yet, in fact, I've just swapped the 24-70/24-240 for an RF 24-105 and Canon 70-300L, got too many lenses (if that's even possible!) As the 24-70 was an F/4, I feel I'm gaining on the extra focal length of the RF24-105 especially with the 5 stop IS over the 4 stop on the 24-70, good for my weddings. Plus I'm just getting into wildlife photography so wanted the extra 60mm over the 24-240 with the 70-300L. Absolutely nothing wrong with the 24-240 or 24-70 just my personal needs have changed plus I've read great reviews on the RF 24-105 from other wedding photographers. Bonus is I've not spent any more money changing my kit, in fact I've gained a little bit. I'm hopefully settled with what I've got but there again show me any photographer who has the perfect kit.

I had the 70-300L, but never carried it. Too heavy, and no appreciable increase in IQ over the 70-300 II. My basic kit now is the 24-105 and 70-300 II. Pretty light and very capable.

Re: Super Zoom?

OOPS! Went off on a bit of a tangent - still got the 24-70L - seemed logical, 24-70/70-300. Personally, I wouldn't use the 70-300II at a wedding but that's just me, I hear it has good reviews though, in some cases better than the DO version! Bit of an anomaly that one methinks!

Re: Super Zoom?

it is a nice shot but that dead zone in foreground is very distracting. i enlarged the photo to a point where made the foreground disappear and the photo looks nice, IMO.

Thanks for posting. I am converting to RF and this is probably my next lens purchase, as a carry around lens and to hold me over until more RF lenses are available.

Re: Super Zoom?

I had read a number of the various reviews and they were sort of "average" but after buying this lens and using it a bit, I have been impressed.  I have not done any sports/action with it yet but landscapes and still life/flowers have been good, IMO.

So the Tammy 70-200 f/2.8 G2 and the 70-300mkII will stay at home most of the time?

Well, it makes it a more difficult choice! The Tamron is a bit of a different niche with the f2.8, it is still going to be the go to for indoor sports and such or for the ability to blow out the background a bit more easily. The 70-300 II is a bit tougher question. It is a nice size and weight, so may just keep it as the lightweight zoom for the two crop bodies that I still own. I need to do a side by side comparison as far as IQ between it and the 24-240.  The 70-300 II can give some really nice images and the R6 only makes it better, IMO.

Re: Super Zoom?

70-200mm f/2.8 has it place.

70-300 on crop next to a full frame body is nice, but if the full frame body goes up to 240mm it's probably not used very often.

Yep, that will be the question.  Probably not enough difference from 240mm to use it on the R6.  And the 24-240 is more versatile and might have somewhat better IQ but for use on the crop bodies as a travel zoom, smaller and lighter than the Canon 100-400.

I think they reference super zoom due to the 10x zoom range, not necessarily the overall zoom reach.  I think it does pretty good for landscapes in my limited time with it.

i beg to differ with you, i wouldn't call a 24-240 a versatile lens. a canon 100-400 II is truly versatile lens considering its mfd and sharpness throughout the range. not only canon 100400 II has a short mfd, it can be used as a macro lens. and for travel? it is the same size as a 70200 when retracted, and believe me, when i put it in my bag, i don't even feel it is there. you can only understand its versatility if you own one!

Back in the film days I had a Tamron 28-200, that was considered a "Super Zoom". But it was pretty bad even from yesterday standards.
