XF 16-55 or Sigma 18-35 + Fringer EF-FX Pro II
1

Hi,

I'm interested in getting either the fuji 16-55 or the 18-35 + finger EF-FX Pro. As far as I know I can get a used 18-35 + finger for a tad cheaper than a new 16-55. Now the thing is I'm also thinking about getting a 16 f/1.4, so I'm wondering about the redundancy with the 16-55. Also the additional 20 mm on the fuji are not that big of a plus for me, since I've got the 35mm+ focal lengths already covered with primes.

So my question is aimed towards anyone who has had the chance to test these lenses in this setup.

Thanks.

I own and use both the 16-55 & the 16/1.4. With the 16-55/2.8 and the 16/1.4 you have two of the finest lenses available for Fuji X-cameras, and with either of them you will get better performance than with your proposed adapted 18-35.

As far as FL redundancy due to the overlap with the 16/1.4 & the 16-55/2.8, the 16/1.4 has several qualities which differentiate it from the 16-55. Those include close focus capability, and the f/1.4 glass. That said, the 16-55 is truly a bag of f/2.8 primes, and matched with your X-H1 you will be hard pressed to find better lenses.

To my mind, using an adapted lens when either of those Fuji lenses is available is unthinkable.

I am VERY much interested in the responses/experiences here between these two ideas. I already own the fantastic Fringer Pro II, and have contemplated picking up the 18-35mm (I also don't care that much about the extra reach even though it's nice). I also like being able to have a lens that I can use on other systems if I so wish (Canon and Nikon Z50 are other branches that can be explored using the Sigma 18-35mm) so there is merit in that as well.

I haven't tried the Fujifilm 16-55mm yet, but from every report I've ever heard it's fantastic, the same of course goes for the Sigma. I am however trying the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART this weekend on my X-H1 (maybe the X-T1 and X-T2 as well if I don't sell the X-T2 by the weekend) and comparing it to the 56mm f/1.2 magic lens. At least I'm hoping to get a good test in between the two anyway haha.

I did forego the Fujifilm 10-24mm lens and instead picked up the Canon 10-18mm STM lens for my ultrawide stuff and I'm extremely pleased with it. It's super light, super sharp, super quick, and super cheap! I love Fujifilm glass (heck I love all glass haha), but I don't mind using adapted glass one bit if it makes sense.

I use Fringer Pro II + EFS 17-55 F2.8 and I'm happy with performance and I think it's a better combination than 16-55 considering the 17-55 having OIS.

Thanks for your imput, much appreciated. The 16-55 from, what I've heard a gem so it definitely is on my mind. The thing is I'm also doing quite a bit of video, and I've read reports of the 18-35 being parfocal when paired with the right adaptor (of course extensive esting would have to be done) + there is the faster aperture. I think I'll be getting the 16 f/1.4 either way, but I have to admit that having that 16mm focal length on the 16-55 is also very tempting, since it is my preferred focal length.

There also a thin possibility that among the 3 yet to be announced fuji lenses is an ultra fast aperture zoom.

Does anyone think it’s time for a 16-55 2.8 refresh?  Maybe this time around it will have OIS. Your thoughts.

Funilly enough this thing just popped up. Nonetheless I believe it was just a mishap from the presenter.

The redundancy depends on what you use them for. If you're shooting landscapes or travel photography with enough light, then the focal length is the main attribute and 16-55 is good enough that the prime is redundant. That's also true with the Sigma and the 16mm prime; 16 vs. 18 is different, but not enough to carry another lens. The Sigma has a closer aperture value to the prime, so I'd say the redundancy is actually greater in that case.

Also the additional 20 mm on the fuji are not that big of a plus for me, since I've got the 35mm+ focal lengths already covered with primes.

So my question is aimed towards anyone who has had the chance to test these lenses in this setup.

The 16-55mm I own is great, and from what I hear the Sigma 18-35 is as well. One has greater focal range, the other a greater aperture. There's not that much more to it, you know better than anyone here which is more important to you.

For me, that is focal range, because focal length is by far the most important attribute of a lens; that's why lenses are named after their focal length first, and other attributes second. If you value f/1.8 higher, then the choice is clear in the other direction. Good luck!

I forgot to say that I also used this lens as well with my X-T2. It worked pretty well for me though it's not as fast as the little 18-55mm Fujifilm. If you get one then make sure you get one without zoom creep haha, it can be helped but it's no less annoying. 😂

This didn't feel too big nor heavy on my X-T2 with L bracket grip, and felt pretty decent to me. (I also love DSLR's still and have no problem with using them any day)
