What would you want CFexpress or SD cards for the next batch of Cameras?

For a while now, I have seen youtubers pushing for CFExpress/xqd. Is it something that people generally want, or do not want. Lets say the R5 would have 50 raw buffer with SD cards, or unlimited with XQD

From my perspective, SD Cards
1) Readily available at more stores, in an emergency.
2) Can be found for cheap. Example, 256GB Sandisk 90MBps Extreme Plus's were available for $40 in December
3) Most people here can afford to buy bunches of spare cards.
4) are physically weaker

CFExpress
1) Its much faster 1400MBps write, and will be faster in the future
2) Unlocks the unlimited buffer
3) Physically Stronger
4) less likely to misplace
5) Expensive. Right now its $400/each for 256GB Sandisk card. Thats $800 in additional cost on your camera.

As a side note, you can get the 512GB Sandisk CFExpress card for $500 right now as a deal of the day from BHPhoto. Also they sell "ProGrade" 256GB CFExpress cards for $280.

I predict that there will be one of each in the R6 and 2 CFExpress in the R5.

CFExpress all day long please, the r5 won't have the specs it's claiming to have without cfexpress cards, or at least one cfexpress card and an sd second slot.

personally, i would prefer 2 cfexpress slots but one cfexpress and one sd would do.

My 1dx3 takes cfexpress cards so I've already got a good stock of 256 cards

I definitely want the latest tech so SD only would be disappointing but it would be nice to have SD as a second slot.

I guess instead  1 CFexpres and 1 SD in the R5 and only one or two SD cards in the R6.

The correct choice is SD+CF like the 5D4, but with UHS-II (at least).

That way customers can choose for themselves.

I prefer to have them both the same, because I like to replicate to both cards.

There is a lot to like about CFExpress, but that price tag.... $800 for a pair of 256GB Sandisk CFExpress cards is as much as a decent lens.

No way that the R5 could fulfill the spec requirements with that configuration. Plus, it’s been awhile since a new body using CF cards has come out. The 5d4 may be the last one to do so.

Canon has no reason to produce cameras with CF cards anymore, the R5 for sure will need at least 1 CF express card to keep up with 45MP@20fps , the R6 instead could make with 20MP@20fps with SD UHS-II and I gues s Canon will follow this path (and maybe also just one card slot) to keep the price low and separate the R6 body from higher end models, instead the R5 wil have both CFexpres and SD to be an acceptable compromise for pro and advance amateurs, but I will not be disappointed if it has 2 CFexpres card

A less expensive model like the R6 is unlikely to have dual card slots of any kind. But it would be very welcome.

CFexpress is the evolution of Cfast, so I wouldnt put it on my the list because it dilutes the choices.

My poll is really about whether people are okay with paying $800 for a pair of 256GB cards(Sandisk 1200MBps write), or would they rather SD cards for the option of cheaper slower cards(Say $80 for Sandisk 90MBps write).

To me, the CFexpress looks great in every way except price.  $800 in cards for a $2500-$3500 body, seems pretty steep.

CFExpress all the way.

SD is a dead format to me. I want instantaneous buffer clears.

PS .. most people with even a 45MP camera wouldn't need 256GB cards. They wouldn't even need 128GB cards.  64GB cards with a 45MP camera should be around 1000 photos.

I am planning on buying into the R system this year. As a sports shooter, I would like one of each -- RAW to the CFExpress, jpg to the SD is the way I prefer to work as it is.

SD for me ...

SD for me. Every camera I own uses them and I have no desire for adding another card type. Nikon probably lost out on a potential customer by ONLY using XQD cards in the Z cameras. I was initially favoring them over an R even though I had EF lenses already.  I do no photography that cannot be handled by a SD card so why would I want to needlessly complicate my life? Hope Canon realizes this.

I agree with you because I don't use video, just stills. But for the 8K video it may require much faster cards that can't be achieved with todays SD cards. I'm suspecting we will see Cfexpress needed because of that. They are crazy expensive but so was SD at one time. As they become more popular the price will drop. I have only 2 cards I carry with me for my R, a 128gb in camera and a 64gb as backup. The 128gb holds over a 1000 RAWs, I'll never shoot that without a chance to off load the card to my locals and cloud. So if the R having 2 slots, I would buy 2 large cards and set camera to record to both cards in RAW so I have a built in backup. Thats what I did with my 5D3.

I wish Canon or someone would come up with a camera completely devoid of video functions.  I don't need  that for PHOTOGRAPHS.  Also I have to laugh at reviews that say camera x is better than camera y because it does 20 fps vs 10 fps.  I doubt even people shooting sports need that, and if they do, I pity them having to sort thru all those photos trying to find the good one to publish.  From a speed and throughput perspective cameras have long eclipsed any speed limit I could use.  I just want to take photos in as simple and straightforward manner as possible.  90% (at least) of the stuff on modern cameras just gets in the way for me.  I'm probably in the minority though.

CFexpress to future proof cameras.

They are expensive now, but that will change once everyone is buying them and costs come down.
