My copy of the XF 18-55 mm R LM OIS, tested with a resolution chart
4

I tested my copy of the 18-55 mm (bought in 11/2018) on my X-T20 as described in this thread. This is of course not a test under scientific lab conditions. It is what I was able to do at home w/o buying any special equipment other than a resolution chart. The test chart may have been lit a little uneven due to my conditions, this is not the lens's fault.

The biggest drawback when testing one single copy of a lens is a missing benchmark, as explained in the post cited above.

My conclusion:

  • In the center, the lens is sharpest at f/5.6 at all FL but also not bad wide open
  • Corner sharpness is best at f/8 and f/11
  • At f/16 and f/22, sharpness suffers significantly at all FL
  • FL sweet spot is "in the middle"
  • If not stopped down too far, my system resolves at least 3200 lph horizontally and 2800-3000 lph vertically (as far as I can assess that as a non-pro)
  • I believe I have a good copy. Thanks Fuji! Most of the photos I've taken to date are perfectly sharp, and with the rest, the man behind the lens was the limiting factor. Only on the large FL end, my copy seems a little weaker on the left side but it should be OK. Let's not pixel peep.

Let me share a few images so you can form your own opinion. In order not to spam, I attached only until f/11. So the sweet spot is always part of the show.

Comments welcome.

Don't forget: the test conditions are described in the thread cited in the beginning. Shutter speeds do not necessarily fit together because with each parameter, the best (sharpest) image was selected from different series.
