Real world difference in SL2 & SL3 and can you touch focus LCD screen on both the SL1,2 & 3?

I have an SL-1 and for whatever reason I bought an SL-2 a couple of years ago. I mainly use them with an 18-135mm lens. Great, lightweight combination compared to my 5D4 and 24-105 lens. However, I am considering getting one of the SL-'s converted to IR and need to be able to touch focus the LCD screen in live view because IR focuses a little different than "normal" and wanted to make sure that both models did have this feature.

Also, I'd appreciate comments about the real world difference or lack of between the SL-2 and SL-3.

Thanks!!!

Kent

Hi Kent,

Look on page 224 of the US English SL2 manual, "Shooting with the Touch Shutter".

It says that if you enable the touch shutter the camera will focus on the spot you tap on and then the picture will be taken.

It appears that it will do what you want.

I had a SL1 and upgraded to a SL2, so I can't address anything about the SL3.

Glenn

Yes on SL3 you can touch focus, and this may be a problem I had some blurred pictures from my last vacation trip to Portugal. I don't wear glasses during my ordinary day only when working on PC screen and if I want to see what I have in my hands (60yo).

Now, walking cities and landscapes during daytime I didn't wore glasses (less things to take care), but I was playing touch on the screen, AF and sub-menus and presets and just playing. And many times I forgot to recycle the programs with the knob. Also left fingerprints on screen, bright sunlight and shades after couple minutes all smushy, not much fun believe me, (for this same reason I was just more smart taking a non touchscreen in my car). Can you imagine now the pros and cons? If your vision is better you will like it more.

I have both (sold the SL2) and both have touch to focus & touch to capture function. SL2 is a bit more snappier in AF acquisition and Servo tracking in Live View mode.

SL3 has an advantage of "Spot" AF point over SL2 in LV, which makes precise AF placement easier. If you use flash, without the central hotshoe pin in SL3, you are limited to only Canon and a few Godox flash.

SL3 can do CRAW & also have 10 frame buffer of 14-bit raw, vs just 5 in SL2.

SL3's default picture styles are softer than SL2 so you may need to bump up the sharpness a notch or two (for SOOC shots).

Also, SL2 seems to have a weaker AA filter, because even in RAW, I find SL2 files to be a tad sharper than SL3's when pixel peeping.

Any other specific questions, let me know.

Also, I'd appreciate comments about the real world difference or lack of between the SL-2 and SL-3.

Thanks!!!

Kent

Thanks attilab and Jack. Very helpful information. Jack I'm not surprised about your comments of the SL-3 vs. SL-2. Many times the upgrades leave something to be desired. I wasn't really planning to upgrade to an SL-3 since I don't use the SL-2 any longer. I bought the SL-1 and SL-2 to use as lighter weight walkarounds compared to my heavy Canon gear and a year or so ago I bought Sony RX100 VI's and they are truly walkarounds and will fit into your pocket and make good photos but I will still keep the SL-2.

Thanks again,

Kent

You are welcome. If I am in your position, I would keep the SL2 and skip the SL3. I bought the SL3 because of the buffer depth and surprisingly it keeps & remember the Video and Still settings separate, which makes it easier switching between. Other than that, SL2 is slightly superior in terms of usability and IQ.

Thanks, Jack. I plan to keep the SL-2 and not upgrade. I use Canon and am "camera poor" but after the bug bit me in 2006, I started with a Rebel XT > 30D > 40D > 7D1 > to 80D now and that's it for a crop for now. Not interested in 90D or 7D2. I may have mentioned this but I bought the SL-s'with 18-135 for a lightweight walk around.

I also have some FF's which I seldom use these days unless it's a special situation. They're just too heavy for no more photography than I do these days unless, as I said, it's a special situation like a couple of photography workshops I have that are coming up in the next few months. I'm also 78 and that's another reason I no longer walk around with 5 or more pounds of photo equipment around my neck.

Thanks again,

Kent
