Seems like the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 not happening anytime soon.

I've been waiting for this lens, as matter of fact the entire trio of viltrox af lenses for aps-c mount for quite some time now. Looks like this is not happening anything soon. Such a bummer. 23mm is THE most useful focal length in daily usage, much more than the sigma 30mm (IMO).

They will come. They made brochures, display models, they make decent lenses already.

Let's hope Covid-19 gets eradicated soon, for all the suffering that it can cause. And then we'll see about our lens.

Viltrox 23mm f1.4 - should be $260, 270g

Sony 24mmf1.8 - $998, 225g

Sony 24mmf1.4 - $1,398, 445g

Really nice! It's damn expensive for a non-professional.

Sounds like another Nikon DL fiasco. Shame, because the 23/33/56 would have really disrupted the APS-C mirrorless market.

Re: Seems like the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 not happening anytime soon.

I suppose they want to do it right first time. Viltrox has all the capabilities (they make a decent AF lens for Fuji and Sony already), they made display models and brochures, so it is not a fantasy product.

But something went wrong somewhere. We can only guess what. Insufficient component quality or availability? An organizational hiccup? Dicovering that it is not robust enough when it is dropped? In any case, a 3 month delay in manufacturing is not strange, even on the back of small issues.

In any case, Covid-19 is not helping. But the lens is the least of my worries in that regard.

True, the law of diminishing returns applies, but will there be QC issues, such as decentering, some uncorrected mustache distortion perhaps, high chromatic aberration, or poor peripheral resolution unless stopped down?  Better correction generally requires more glass and complexity.  It is also easier/cheaper to produce a good slower lens than a good fast one.

Unfortunately "High end" Sony lens arent immune from decentering and poor quality control though. Its still a lucky dip no matter what price youre paying (with Sony anyway).

Generally more durable build and weather sealing is considered professional.

What's non-professional?

A non-professional is someone who does not earn money taking pictures, that pays for their camera gear.

If the Viltrox is as good (or hopefully better) than the Zony 24 f1.8, I will take a very hard look at it.

Factories have shut down to fight virus have consequences
2

I'm understand & equally disappointed.  I too been waiting for Viltrox 23mm F/1.4.  In fact, I think Sigma badly needs a Sigma 23mm F/1.4 DN to complete the F/1.4 DN set. As Sigma 16mm is TOO WIDE for portrait Sigma 30/1.4 can feel restrictive indoor.

Sadly, factory shutdown is an effective (but necessary costly step) to avoid spreading of virus.  Japanese CP+ photo show is cancelled, Sony said it will affect sensor production, and mostly affect Tesla battery production too.

The brightside is that Chinese Government may finally get serious about Food Safety.  We need a Chinese version of USDA, where MEAT products must be inspected, and shutdown all non-approced meat markets.  Burn then down 🔥

Professional tools for builders are often more expensive and strong.

But in some cases amateurs spend more on tools as it is their hobby and not based on a cost/benefit ratio. Think boating. But perhaps also photography...

I suppose a professional is someone that makes a living with mostly photography, and might need superior quality equipment compared to hobbysts.

In my country you can also cash back from taxes the VAT on your purchases if you are a professional with VAT ID.

They will be back to work soon.

Warehouses in Shenzhen are already working, the employees for sales and r&d are working from home.

I go there every year for work, perhaps next time I will ask if I can visit
