Test shots with 1DX3
11

Took a couple of shots at lunch with the new 1DX3.  I happened to have my EF400/4DOII + 2x III with me.  That lens combination is a tough one as it pushes the limits of aperture and IQ but here a couple of attempts.

AF speed in classical setup seems faster than the 1DX2 which is a nice to see.  Haven't  tried any of the automatic tracking modes yet.  Just did expanded point and small group.

The 16fps has a very satisfying sound to it.

This first one was a big surprise.  I don't know if I have ever seen a bald eagle here in Silicon Valley. I had heard they were starting to show up here and there but hadn't seen any nearby.  Saw it from a long distance at the very top of a dead tree and literally ran the quarter mile to get close.

Sorry, no good BIF opportunities yet.

I was using dual 512GB Sandisk CFexpress cards and used a Sandisk reader I had already bought on Amazon (it appears to be the same as the one that came with the camera but I haven't opened that one yet.  The download was extremely fast.

Not shabby at all! A far cry from the early Digital Camera's at High ISO. My 1st was an Olympus C2000z in 1999 and at 400 ISO (It's max) it was noisier than a rock band reunion!

Isn't ISO 65532 the cap here on this website for embedded EXIFs?

Did you actually take it at that, or could it have been higher?

Congrats on getting the new cam guys. Interested to see how the sensor performs in raw compared to the mark II. I’m assuming this is a new sensor and perhaps the R5 will be on the same platform? Nice cat

Actually looks like it was ISO 80000

I actually think it is ISO 80000.

I remembered setting it to 80000, but then I saw the EXIF was 65536, and assumed I must have accidentally changed it.

But maybe not. Just checked the camera, and it's still set at 80000. Just checked the JPEG in Photoshop, and it's 80000. So it looks like you might be right - this is DPR bug.

In any case, remarkable low light performance. IMO.

No Bug, i have shot on several cameras at 100,000 ISO, but for some reason DPR defaults always to 65,000 ISO, i guess its something to do with the software they use.

That is literally the definition of a software bug.

I wasn't very impressed with Canon's verbal claims, as there is a lot of weaseling room in descriptive terms, and this certainly isn't an all-encompassing example, but I can't find anything in this image that I would call bad noise character; it looks very fine and random. Also, the new AA filter probably allows for a converter to apply less sharpening than the 1Dx2 for the same overall effect, so noise doesn't get emphasized at much to achieve a certain level of acuity.

Thanks! I felt very lucky to have the chance to photograph a bald eagle here where sightings are rare. Furthermore, I felt equally lucky to actually be able to use a brand new camera well enough not to mess up the chance.

Re: Test shots with 1DX3

Thanks for the images, looks really nice.

Do you have access to 1DX II to do some comparison shots, especially to see the claimed resolution improvement due to the new AA filter?

Thanks
