Can you read the shutter count for M6 II?

Is there any software that can read it?

I just picked up a used M6 II for $900 with 18-150 and EVF.

Now i need to buy the 32mm

I have an M5 and I can't find a way to view the shutter count either. Magic lantern isn't an option, and neither is CHDK.

Does it really matter these days? Especially with a new model like the M6 II? I've had cameras for many years and never ever had a shutter failure

It does when you're trying to sell it. Many people are still using shutter count as an indicator of the age of a camera, like the odometer of a car. I do agree that shutter count is getting less relevant these days when we can use electronic shutter or do video without touching the shutter more than once.

Take a photo, transfer it over using the EOS utility, then look at the file name. You should see something like IMG_0690.CR3 or IMG_0691.JPG, The number in the file name should be a rough indication of shots taken. I say rough because the numbering can be reset from within the camera at anytime.

But the numbers roll over regularly.  Whenever I search my LR library by file name, I routinely find quite a number with the same name, even after culling, so who knows how many times it rolled over.

Keep in mind too that if you, the seller can't get the number, the buyer can't either.  Will that force them to Sony?  I doubt it.  Rather, it just shows the ignorance of some buyers.

I think most of the Canon Digic 6,7 has a option to request camera settings over USB. The shutter count reader applications does it too.

Send a command like "CAMINFODATA" and you can recieve back an xml sctucture like.
(this logs from my M5 cameras, I have two, serials has masked with ****)

The info what you interested is the <TotalShoot> xml tag.

For the M cameras I don't normally see the shutter count advertised on places like eBay, so I don't think this is much of a consideration. The main consideration is the overall condition of the camera.

I shoot my M6ii in e-shutter mode so much of the time anyway, I am not sure what shutter count reports either --- mechanical and e-shutter?  Just mechanical? So what would a shutter count even mean to a buyer.

The only shutter failure I've experienced myself was on an EOS M2.  I have no idea what the shutter count was, though.  Of course it gave out on me a few days into a 3 week road trip.  Good thing I had another camera body so as to not miss getting some incredible shots of grizzly cubs in the Canadian Rockies.

These things are small enough to keep a spare body handy.  I'd recommend doing that regardless of the shutter count.
