RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM, priced at $400

The RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM will have an introductory price of $400.

We don't yet know how it performs and how long it keeps f4, but what are your thoughts on it?

For reference, the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM Lens is $899 and the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens is $1099.

I will wait for the review on corner sharpness

Judging from the list price of $299 for the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, the new 24-105 will be packaged with the RP or the not yet announced R6 as a kit lens for less than $399 above body only.

As for image quality, it will probably have barrel distortion as bad as the 24-240 at 24mm.  But jpg only shooters will never see it after the body corrects it.  This is the trend started by Panasonic, lousy barrel distortion and correction by firmware.  This is the easiest way to build inexpensive kit lens.  The down side is very poor corner sharpness, as the firmware stretches the corners outward.

My thought is: “a standard kit zoom is something that comes with the camera; the list price is just for show.”

If I were in the market for this lens (I’m not, as I have the RF 24-105L), I’d grab a barely used copy on the cheap from someone selling off the kit lens.

To lower your expectations a bit, Canon says up front that the “center focus macro” mode (MF only 0.5x macro) has compromised sharpness in the corners. The fact that they put that in the advertising blurb of all places means the corners must be an absolute disaster at macro distance.

We’ll see about the non-macro cases.

For sure.  This lens will be $200 or less pretty quickly on eBay.

I’m hoping that it will be optically as good as the EF 24-105 stm. I guess it’s doable given the slow aperture. Would be a letdown if Canon started relying too much on in camera corrections for affordable mild wide angle to telephoto zoom lenses as this one.

If you're snapping bugs or flowers, the corners will be way out of focus anyway.  Expecting to copy documents with a cheap zoom lens is over-optimistic.

Don't know what the MSRP difference is between R /RP body only vs. body+RF 24-105/4.0-7.1 in other regions, but for Europe I gather that it is indeed around 450-500€ (while the lens can currently be pre-ordered for 499€ (VAT incl.) at various outlets). This makes me think that those who choose to buy the body+lens kit will do so with the intention of keeping the lens for some time (and perhaps add the RF 35 or the RF 50/1.8 later on).

i see it as a entry drug to the R system, once you get them hooked onto the R, then the L will come.
