Brand new X-E3 with eye sensor issues...

Last week while I was traveling I picked up a brand new sealed X-E3 and 16/2.8 from an authorized US brick and mortar dealer. I didn’t open it up until I got home last night since my memory cards were back home, and I charged it overnight. The plastic bag was sealed with the silver Fuji sticker.

This morning I started setting up up and immediately noticed the EVF eye sensor isn’t doing anything. When I cycle the View Mode, I get the following options in order:

  • Eye Sensor - in this mode it acts just like LCD only
  • EVF Only
  • LCD Only
  • Totally blank, no banner at all - I believe this is the EVF + Eye Sensor mode
  • Eye Sensor + LCD Image Disp - in this mode it acts just like LCD only

Firmware is 1.22.

I’ll call Fuji USA and the dealer after they open, but does anyone have any suggestions? The eye sensor is clean, and it doesn’t work either bare eye, with glasses or with a finger blocking the sensor.

Doing either menu reset doesn’t seem to take the camera all the way back to as new, the time is still set. How do I do a total reset?

Choose:  “Set-up Reset

  • Reset all setup menu settings (such as menu settings, language, etc.) to default values.
  1. Select OK to complete the reset.”

Maybe the time won’t reset because the non removable internal battery is charged, I don’t know.

After all is said and done and your photo is hanging on the wall, no one is going to know or care what camera, lens, or what post processing you used. All they care about is if the image moves them.
I’m not hung up on the Bokeh fad because I’m too busy chasing shadows.

That’s what I have been trying.  Oh, well - email sent to the store to ask about a replacement body.  It’s very discouraging that a brand new body has issues...

The dealer stepped right up and is getting me a replacement, and has already sent a call tag for the return.

That’s great. Just remember that lemons happen once in awhile to all brands. I know it sucks though.

True, and I’ve been lucky - my last new camera that came out of the box with problems was a new F3 in around 1983...
