24mm Prime Options

I'm currently looking at options for a 24mm prime to use for landscape photography while hiking.

I have been using my EF 40mm f2.8 STM but really want something a bit wider.

The options I have are the following;

Canon EF-S 24mm f2.8 STM

Canon EF 24mm f2.8 IS USM

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG Art

Apart from the obvious differences in size/weight/features can anyone give any feedback pros/cons and experiences?

Will be using with my EOS 7D.

If you’re happy with the 40 STM, the 24 STM seems like the obvious choice. cheap, small and light.

Hi Thorbard,

I have both the 40 pancake and the EF 24 f/2.8 IS USM.

if you like shooting with primes and don’t want to kill your budget then the Canon 24 IS USM is fantastic. I read it is not so good on full frame but with the 7D I found it perfect.

it will give a full frame equivalent of 38mm which for my taste is more than enough and o don’t feel I need wider. Using it at night handheld is a pleasure as it works very very well. I’ve made some very nice shots at night with it.

go for it!

I have had the 24mm f2.8 STM for about a year.  Honestly, I use it way more than I ever thought that I would.  It is a great little lens, light, small and really sharp.  I have used it on a T3i, 7D and 7DII and have been very happy with the images from all three bodies.  Many times I will drop it in my pocket when I am shooting sports with a large zoom, just to have in case I need a wider angle shot at some point during the event.

I have a similar experience.  If light weight is a consideration, pancake delivers.

Thanks for the feedback. This has been my experience with the 40mm f2.8 STM. I did wonder if the IS made the more expensive lens worth it.

To be honest if you want to use it at night the IS is brutal. I’ve taken shots at 1/10 or less without any issue which is something you won’t be able to do with the STM version. It’s up to you but the IS is clearly a better optics.

Have owned the sigma 24 f/1.4 art.

A nice lens, not pin sharp at f/1.4 but fine - and very nice at f/2.

Sold because autofocus accuracy whilst tolerable was not perfect and lack of my use and quite heavy for an occasional lens.  Did like it though and sorry to sell it in some ways.
