t3i short battery life in video mode

In normal still shooting get very long battery life - hundreds of shots - with t3i.  Using off-brand batteries  reliably for years.

With desire to shoot some video w/cam, just very surprised to find battery life is less than a minute with two different and fully charged batteries. Camera dies before video file can even be saved.  The battery is  completely exhausted and camera won't turn on until battery is recharged.

Canon support can't help because camera is out of support range.

Question is whether anyone else on the forum experienced same issue and how did it get resolved.??

thnx

(a followup question is whether the newer txi series such as the t7i will auto focus during video shooting which the t3i will not)

Re: t3i short battery life in video mode

I don't shoot video with my Canon T2i (550D) camera, but I did get Wasabi batteries for them a few weeks back.  I heard Wasabi was a good brand; they have been fine for stills.  I wish I could help, but I just don't do video...hopefully someone will respond for you.

Thanks for input.  I have no problem w/ battery life on stills. I'm surprised that this has not happened to other users or that there's been no response.  i suppose t3i posts are dwindling given the age of the camera. I don't like to move on to "bigger and better" when my present camera has done well for me.  We shall see

Re: t3i short battery life in video mode

I'm still using the Canon T3i (600D) camera with my Tamron 150-600mm lens.  But I think it will be soon when I upgrade it.  Yes, it's a great camera.

I bought my second Canon T7i (800D) camera recently so now they will replace both of my Canon T2i (550D) cameras.  It's the advancement in technology that prompts me to upgrade.  Otherwise, they all are still good.

I have done very little video shooting with my t3i but from what I did experience my camera did not eat thru batteries like yours is.  If you check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PVZu4JDCvc it gives a pretty good idea of the movie AF capability of the t7i. Hope it helps.

Re: t3i short battery life in video mode

Problem resolved. It was both batteries. enough life in them to operate normally on stills (lots of shots possible).  But video must make some special demands on the battery and as soon as videoing started, the existing batteries were toast in half a minute.  I just got in a couple of off brand but new batteries and the video mode is operating as it should.

Thanks for the YouTube link to t71 quto focus operation. Am going to take a look at it right now.  The t3i hunts for focus if you try to refocus during shooting.  It's not a reliable camera for this unless you have some editin gear and can lay in cutaways or b roll when the camera is trying to focus.
