What body to buy next?

Ok, so I have a Panasonic G7, an Olympus Pen EPL-6, and a decent horde of Panasonic glass.

I have the following lenses

12-35 f/2.8 II

45-150 f/4-5.6

100-300 f/4-5.6 II

14-42 f/3.5-5.6 PZ (usually used on the Pen)

25 f/1.7

42.5 f/1.7

I shoot mostly for fun, I've done a side gig or two though in portraiture.  I mostly do wildlife and nature photography but still do a lot of family portraits in my fun stuff role.

I'm looking at a newer body, and I'd like weather sealing, I'd like the Dual IS, but I'm not in love with the weight and size of the G9, and I feel like the G95 isnt really worth the $400 upgrade cost over the G85.  I've been eyeing the G85, but buying a "new" body that is four years old seems like a questionable decision.  I've considered the Olympus OMD EM5-III, but I really love my G7, and would hate to give up the Dual IS if I were to go to a newer Panasonic body.

Thoughts?  Just buy the G85 and deal?  Keep my G7 until I kill it or something comes along to strike my fancy?  Pray Olympus and Panasonic finally listen to us and support each others in-body/in-lens stabilization?

Re: What body to buy next?

I think it is highly unlikely that Olympus/Panasonic cameras will ever support dual stabilization with the other manufacturers lenses.  The systems are almost certainly designed from the beginning to work together and unless they used the same IBIS and OIS systems it would require complete knowledge of how each others stabilization systems worked to develop programs which would be better than either stabilization system alone.  I do not think either manufacturer would release that information to a competitor when there is so little benefit for them for that collaboration.

If maximum stabilization performance is that important to you and the 6.5 stops of the E-M5.3 are not sufficient, then you probably should choose one of the Panasonic cameras that can provide better stabilization with your lenses.

Keep your g-7 , work with you have g-9 meh, g 85 meh, I had a g-5 5yrs

Used E-M1mk2

To me, it seems trimmer body than the G9, so it may possibly meet your reduced-size preferences, and it is readily available used, in ex. condition, at good savings.

Good luck with your plan.

Once he has conceded that photography is not a naturalistic medium of rendition and that striving for naturalism in a photograph is futile, he can turn his attention to using a camera to make more effective pictures."

Re: What body to buy next?

My last main camera is GX7 and GX85. Since wife loves GX85, I was looking for a upgrade for quite a while to replace my aged GX7 which started to show its age after years of shooting.

I decided to skip GX9 since it has not the large enough improvement from GX85 that I want it to be.

While waiting for a GX10, I was attracted by the deeply discount G85 (It was even cheaper than the GX85 I bought in 2016!). What I had lost for not going for G95?

  • 4Mp less resolution (I always prefer to have the optical reach rather than cropping),
  • some features I might rarely use (Live Composite),
  • already a satisfactory GX85/G85 jpg engine, already 4K ready, 1/2000" EFCS,
  • might be less convenience on not having the My Menu on menu diving,
  • I don't need direct USB power source...

GX85 should be well enough for my shooting for some years to come*. So will be G85. I suppose unless a break though on sensor technology (organic sensor?), OSPDAF, super high resolution (40Mp or more with good noise control), 6K/8K video and still photo modes, G9's level of AF tracking ability... otherwise I might stick to my existing gear for quite some time until they breaks. A £335 or US$430 for a brand new G85 (33%~50% cheaper than a G95) is hard to resist.

* cannot rule out a GX10 to upgrade my wife's GX85 if the camera started to show its age later...
