Re: P1000 or P950

My hint would be to wait for the P950. 83x zoom is comfortably enough for birding if used skillfully. And we have already seen some excellent images by Aisse and Dodge made by P900.

Nikon announced start of P950 sales on 6th Feb. Only 4 days to go.

unless one learns to fly there will always be situations where another 1000mm will come handy, also skilled photographers are more likely to properly use the bonus reach

I had the same choice. I was torn between fz1000ii p950 and p1000, I was very close to fz1000 but it just didn't have the reach to make me excited. I also thought the the P1000 was just too big. Imagine being at a wedding with the monstrosity. So I was looking finally at P950 but they really should have upgraded the sensor so my final decision was... Who cares what they think, go big or go home. I want to touch the sky. This thing has bragging rights!

Hello, having myself to decide bw P1000 and newer P950 I finally chose the P1000, here are the reasons

P1000 is slightly cheaper when I write this vs P950 while it should be opposite

The whole point of such camera is reach, I plan to use it mostly at high magnification, if I want to take medium range pictures, I use other camera I already have

On the other hand if you plan to have one as your only camera P950 is likely a better choice

Aside size and weight there is not any feature improvement on P950 vs P1000 two years after

So yes it's bulky, but no more than an large DSLR, I have weighed my D800E+lens above 2,5kg not even with a grip

just my 2 cents

regards

Welcome to the Coolpix forum.   Good choice, the P1000 is a modern marvel, as the 3000mm reach is unique among cameras.
