XC 35 f/2
1

So as some of you may have noticed, some rumors sites are reporting the announcement of a new entry level iteration (XC) of the much beloved 35mm focal length due tomorrow. It is reported that it will feature an f/2 max aperture, a 43mm filter thread and weight 130g. It will also lack a aperture ring - in line with the other XC lenses design.

Any thoughts on that? Are you worried of a possible cannibalization with the (most certainly) more expensive XF 35 f/2? Thanks for taking the time to read this and have a nice day.

Based on the photos released so far, it looks like it lacks a true aperture ring and that the build quality is definitely lower (no WR), consistent with the other XC models. My guess is that optically it won’t be as strong either but maybe we’ll be nicely surprised. I’m really not sure why Fuji chose another 35mm lens as their first XC prime. I get that it’s a nifty fifty and all that, but I don’t think it appeals enough to existing users many of whom already I’ve the XF f/2 and/or f1.4 versions. Would’ve been nice if they changed the focal length up a bit to attract a wider customer base.

Hopefully its priced appropriately at around $150. Any more and it doesnt really make sense.

I think it's meant to be a cheap 'prime kit,' meaning it will be bundled with Fuji's lower range cameras (X-A7 and X-T200), probably for no more than $100 extra, or $150 if sold separately. I expect the IQ to be on par with XF35f2 but of lower build quality.

We shall see tomorrow.

More choice is a good thing and is a sensible entry prime like the canon and Nikon 50s

Agreed, it would be nice if they gave us another option in the 50 to 55mm range instead

A solid and "faster" 27 would be nice, but not in this category of lenses, it would have to be an XF configuration. And a new roadmap would be neat too

No. 50mm equiv is the most popular. Followed by 35mm equiv. 85mm equiv short telephoto is an odd choice for a standard beginner cheap prime. Theres a reason why nifty fifties were cheap and plentiful. A 35/2 is the right choice as the first XC prime.

Hope its priced below €200.

This is one of the reasons that makes buyers still decide for DSLR, cost of the second lens which usually is a prime or a telephoto.

Canon has the 50 1.8 STM at €130, Nikon the 35mm 1.8 at €175.

Even in Sony E mount there's the 50mm OSS 1.8 at €250.

The XF 35mm f2 is Fuji's cheapest fast prime at €370 to €400.

And then we have 3 Viltrox lenses coming at €250 to €300... Fuji had to make a move, and fast.

I could care less how it impacts Fuji’s other lenses... for those with cash, they won’t care. Those without cash now have a cheap option. I have both Fuji 35mm lenses and will buy this too. Perfect travel and sketchy neighborhood lens. Light, cheap, and small.

this is an interesting business strategy by Fujifilm

Assuming they will price this competitively ($200-250) this will make entering the Fuji system a lot cheaper.

Fujifilm will probably package this as a kit lens. An XT200 with a 15-45 and a XC 35mm F2 for $750 would be a compelling bargain for beginners. Having just a 50 equivalent would be challenging for beginners who are used to the 26-29mm phones.

It will probably be a kit lens since all XC lenses are available in kits and terrible value if purchased standalone.

Judging by the minimum aperture and filter size, the new lens might be optically identical to the XF 35 f2 which is already relatively cheap. No significant R&D and production investment required. Just substitute metals with plastics and there you have it, you expended your lens lineup with a well performing and inexpensive winner. Good move, Fuji...

From that perspective it makes sense.  I guess I'm just a little disappointed they put resources into designing a lens at the same focal length as two existing lenses.  At least they changed the "upcoming" f/1.0 lens to be a 50mm instead of 33mm.  That would've been a complete cluster of lenses all at nearly the same focal length.   Maybe they also had this lens in mind when they made that change.

Re: XC 35 f/2

It's nice to see that the "camera plus prime" kit offers have not been abandoned.

Canon did something similar with their original EOS M back in 2011 or so, kitting it with the very good 22 f2.

Not worried. Fuji has long needed an entry level prime... nifty fifty. Pretty standard. Now if they can release a wide zoom xc like the canon 10-18 stm they will have most bases covered in that department.

fujis lighter bodies aren’t wr anyway. (Xe, xt 100, xa, xt **)

the Fuji crons were more designed for the x pro series in mind, the tapered nose hides the lens from the ovf.

Great news and a great offering from Fuji. The only prime I have right now is a Samyang 50m 1.2 manual lens and if this one is budget friendly they have my pre- order.

would love a XF prime but with two kids in hockey and a new baby that isn't going to happen any time soon lol.

It was the Canon 300D and a cheap Canon 50mm F1.8 that started my addiction.....

And a 50mm f2. And a 56mm f1.2. And almost every single zoom stopping around there at the short end and long end. Which was my point; that the 35mm space may be crowded, but 50-55mm even more so.
