Is the Canon ivy rec any good?

Last week I was running the Egmond half marathon. At the start point I could have made some really nice pictures like pictures of the runners taking shelter for the wind behind some Porto cabins. Or of the view I had of all the legs in front of me when I was checking my shoes.

I did carry my phone with me but it was tucked away in an arm pouch with a plastic bag around it. So it wasn't easily accessible.

I was still thinking about this missed opportunity when I read this article on dpreview:

https://www.dpreview.com/articles/7894589209/canon-shows-off-new-concept-cameras-at-ces-2020

It's about concept camera's canon showed at ces. Somewhere in the article or in the comments the ivy rec is mentioned. The Ivy rec used to be one of these concept camera's but Canon actually choose to take this one into production.

The ivy rec could be a good "take with me when I go running" camera. It waterproof, shock proof small en light. But it also has a very tiny sensor so it could also be an "end up in the drawer" camera.

Because I don't like "end up in the drawer" camera's I did a little search for reviews and samples but I could not find any thing useful. Canon has some samples but i cannot download them. I found some reviews on YouTube but there not really good. Some guy used it a night and than claimed that it wasn't any good.

So my question is: Is there anyone here who has hands on experience with the ivy rec and wishes to share it with us or maybe even share some full sized sooc jpegs made with  the ivy?

Thanks in advance.

It's an old post, but I've started playing with one. this is the deal:

It's not as good as a decent phone. It shouldn't be an only camera.

It's pretty rugged. You can drop it in the sand, get it wet, throw it in a beach bag without fear. Think of it as a low cost GoPro.

It can use your phone as a remote control and view finder. I picked one up to mount on my front bumper to monitor rocky terrain off roading. I could view, and film from my phone on the dash.

Street and crowd photography where you don't wish to be conspicuous. Phone stays in your pocket,

Hi jxh,

Thanks for your answer, still not sure if it's something for me.

Could you please post a few sample shots?

Thanks in advance.

I've not done too much with it, but here are two boring photos taken at the same time.  I haven't posted pictures, I don't know it the site downsamples or not. The phone shot is better, but the Ivy is usable if the simple small rugged or remote control are priorities for the job.

Hi jxh,

Thanks. These pictures sure help a lot. Quality of the ivy is not as good as I hoped.

Still not sure if I should buy one.

It is what it is. Probably the cheapest form of remote control camera, which was my key priority.  It'll probably be covered with mud much of the time anyhow.

I finaly bought it new for 45$cad at The Source.

I used it a lot this XMas and here is my though about this little camera

It is fun to use, you can bring it anywhere, put it in any bag, pocket, hang it anywhere.

With quite some light, photo are descent, not the best, but considering where you took them, that's not bad at all.

I though there was too much correction on portrait.

It is quite bad in low light situation.

Video mode exists, works fine, but not the best, stabilisation is minimal but here.

I honestly have trouble with the apps, it works, but the phone must use wifi, not cellular data ... the interface is minimalist, not usable outside without wifi, but exists.

In the end, it is just a great toy who makes photos and videos ... I always have him in my pocket.

Will I use him as a prime canera? Surely not!

But I find him an excellent use case ... always in my pocket, when outdoor and my 10 years son begins to be bored, I give it to him ... and his interest is bring back, and he loves to experiment with it.

I also use it myself when I do not have my camera or I do not want to use my phone.

For only 45$cad (new), I love it, would I have paid 209$cad? I do not think so.
