Hi all, I am looking to purchase a Speedlite or Ring flash that is compatible with my Canon powershot SX60. Mostly for close up or macro work. Anyone having any experience, please comment. Thank you.

For close up / "macro" work I'd use the built-in flash with a diffuser and a close up filter Raynox DCR-250. I have tested it with an SX50. It has a good working distance to the subject and in the right distance, the autofocus also works well. This solution is the lightest I found. I consider weight very important when you have to stay in an uncomfortable position because of the subject (like a bug in the garden).

You can use a ring flash, but I wouldn't attach it to the lens, because it's heavy and it might damage the lens mechanism. So you would need to hold the front piece to position the light. It's not comfortable, but you can be creative with the light. If you intend to use TTL, buy a Canon flash. If you use manual flash, you can buy any ring flash compatible with Canon (for example Yongnuo). Third party TTL flash is usually only compatible with DSLRs.

I like to use a speedlite to photograph people or other subjects indoors. I bounce the light on the walls to get softer light.

Hi, I used the same setup with Raynox dcr 150, with a homemade diffuser. Recently the pop up flash is having a problem and not firing all the time, maybe some contact issues.. that's why I am looking for external light source.

I can't picture how a tall speed light on the hot shoe is going to throw light evenly to a close up macro subject, but for compatibility, there is at least one Yongnuo model that works in TTL with my SX50. Quite likely it would work with the '60' as well.
Yongnuo 565EX II - that's the exact model I bought even though there are III's and there are 568's, etc. because of someone else's success.

As we know, manufacturers add and drop features with every revision so I wasn't taking chances. If you are feeling lucky, the III revision has a USB for firmware updates, or move up to a newer model. I'm not that brave.
Yongnuo keeps a half decent website but it takes some searching.

I bought mine on Ebay last August for $55 new (that dealer source is not found now) and I'm quite happy with seeing the flash interact with the camera. I also have a wireless remote and it works the flash off camera but it's a standard cheapie so there's no off camera TTL. I just reminded myself to add a TTL extension cable to my next online order.

I'm done rambling Good luck.

If you want to replace the built-in flash, the smallest Canon flash is the 90ex. An interesting feature is that it can control off camera flash (optical). If you don't photograph bugs, you can buy a 270EX II and use it as a remote optical slave. As the flashes communicate using visible light, it may scare them. There are other Canon flashes that work as optical slaves, the 270EX II is the lightest and in my opinion it is suitable for macro work.

If you want a small and light flash with tilt and swivel head, you can buy the Canon EL-100. I like the possibility to tilt and swivel the flash head to bounce the light off the walls.

The 430EX III RT has more features, including slave radio flash, but I think it's a little heavy.

Recently I updated my Godox TT350C firmware and TTL seems to be working with the SX50. It has lots of features, similar to the 430EX III for a lower price and it's considerably lighter too.

Why not just get a regular external flash with optical slave? Youngnuo for example are around $60 new and $20 used and will fire when your built in flash fires. You can put any sort of diffuser, light modifier, or flash gel on it u want because it’s just a regular dslr hot shoe flash. The sky is the limit For creative options with a regular flash. Just hold it in your hand to put light exactly how you want it (or use light stand if u want).  No reason to use the hot shoe.

I want to use exclusively for my macro photography. Can you recommend the model number of Yongnuo? I sort of use it with my home made diffuser. I like the results but lately the popup flash is not being reliable. I just want a replacement that'll work in field. Sort of walk and shoot kind of macro.

Shared from camera lcd. This is a result I'm getting from my current setup..I want a better flash.

Thank you.
