But Sigma can create a "work alike" code that looks like Canon's code to the camera...that's perfectly legal, and it's what they've been able to do so far.

Must be as I happen to be using Sigma's Art lenses, the 14-24 f2.8 DG HSM and 105mm f1.4 DG HSM and they work just as if they were native to the RF when I'm using the Canon adapter. Eye tracking and exposures are dead on. The savings was substantial (average over $1000 per lens) so no complaints there.

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.

Re: When will Sigma and/or Tamron produce RF lenses?

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but in light of Viltrox decision to discontinue RF mount products after Canon demand, I am curious about the following questions, then answers to which I could not find by googling them:

Canon EF mount was introduce in 1986.   What year did Tamron and/or Sigma introduced the first EF mount lens (any kind, manual or autofocus)?  Did Tamron/Sigma have to wait the entire 15 or so years for Canon EF patent to expire?

If anyone knows, let me know.  I could not find the info what were the first Tamron/Sigma EF products and when they came out.

According to Canon Rumors :

  • Canon doesn’t feel the RF lineup is anywhere near maturity, and they want the lineup filled out with their own lenses first. Canon still has lots of work to do in both the non-L and L lineups.
  • Canon believes the “more affordable” options are already covered by the hundred and whatever million EF lenses out there that work extremely well on the RF mount with Canon’s line of adapters.
  • Canon isn’t done with tweaks and improvements to the RF mount.

They didn’t, at all. I don’t think there were any third-party lenses released for it in ‘86, but in 1990 at least there were already plenty of Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses for EF. Lenses like the Tokina 20-35mm and Sigma UC 24-50mm were launched simultaneously for EF, A and F mounts.

1990 or 1990s?

Certainly I got a 24-50 in 1991 - it fell apart a few years later. I also bought the Sigma 70-300 UC APO and the 18mm f3.5 - both of these were made inoperative by a later Canon change to protocols. The 18 was launched in early '92, i bought mine in May.
Early on, there was quite a lot of talk of how limited the lens situation was for EOS - something that seems preposterous now.

No change in protocol

Canon did not change the communication protocol. That is witnessed by the fact that their very earliest lenses always worked properly, and in fact, my f1.8 50mm Mk I (metal mount) lens from 1986 still works perfectly with the EF adaptor on my EOS R cameras.

Canon did not change the protocol, they greatly reduced the power output of their cameras beginning, I believe, with the Elan 2.  When the 3rd party manufacturers reverse engineered the EF mount, they didn't take into account that native Canon lenses used far less power than the early EF cameras provided.  The 3rd party larger zooms, in particular, used every bit of power provided by the cameras.

When Canon reduced the power output of the camera (to reduce the size of the batteries), it left many of those 3rd party lenses gasping...

...but not all, which is also witness to the fact that the protocol had not been changed.

Bums me out to see how this all transpired. I had such high hopes for the RF system.

If you want to fulfill your  highest hopes, then RF lenses for the R cameras have always been the very best option (IME).

"The fact is that relatively few photographers ever master their medium. Instead they allow the medium to master them and go on an endless squirrel cage chase from new lens to new paper to new developer to new gadget, never staying with one piece of equipment long enough to learn its full capacities, becoming lost in a maze of technical information that is of little or no use since they don't know what to do with it."
