over 4 years out but still excellent value

I bought my G7 in fall 2017. It came bundled with the 14-140.

I enjoyed both, they make a perfect travel kit, versatile, compact and light.

I know the G7 is 2015 technology with the 16MP sensor.

In fall 2018 I bought a GX8 bundled with the 12-60mm f3.5-5.6.  And since, my G7 often stayed on its shelf, as I enjoyed more the ex-flagship GX8, with the newer and better 20MP sensor, IBIS, better built and feeling more rugged, plus some extra bells and whistles....

The G7 is more compact and lighter than the GX8, but when I want to go really small, no M43 body can beat my GM5.

Recently I decided to shhot again with my G7, just for the fun.

Which is why I now write this review.

Shooting with a G7 is still very enjoyable in 2020. IQ is excellent, the OLED viewfinder is almost as good as the one in GX8, and the ergonomy on par.

I like  the deeper grip than in the rangefinder GX8, the camera feels very nice in my hand.

The built-in flash is convenient, either for fill-in or to trigger remote flashes, and when shooting 4K video, the crop is only 1.1, vs 1.2 on the GX8.

Actually, the G7 is very much like a plastic G80 and is still on sale new in my country at bargain price.

The only feature I miss is the IBIS when shooting with non OIS primes like the 20 and 25 f1.7.

Happily, all my zooms are OIS, and so is my 42.5.

Also very good 7 years ago!

I can go even further back with an older model, the G5 from 2012. I took it with the original version of the 14-140 on various trips including a Rhine river cruise, and got some of the best photos I've ever taken, including up to the present with the G9 and EM-1 mkii. I also took the GX-1 (even older by a year) and 20mm f1.7 for interiors and low light. Memories of that great travel combination are what brought me back to m43 after interesting forays through Fuji APS-C and Sony FF.
