Good for the price but not good. The Pany 100-300 is a a little better but not much. Tried both and picked up a new 100-400 last week, wish I'd done that a year ago. Even without dual-is on my EM1 MK1, I get 100% keepers at 1/50th at 400mm and over 50% keepers at 1/25th sec. By shooting sort bursts, I get at least a couple keepers from every shot at 1/25th.

I seriously considered the Canon 100-400 II with Metabones Smart Adapter. A sharper lens than the Panasonic and if Canon ever delivers a decent mirrorless body, I could make the switch to a larger sensor. But looking at the history of Canon innovation, it is going to take them 3-4 years to catch up to the current EM1 MK2 and another 2 years to match the Fuji X-T3 much less the soon to be available X-T4. While the latest tech is not required for great photos, that depends on the whetware behind the viewfinder, I'm heavily into handheld bracketing. For that the 30 fps cropped of the X-T3 is the minimum while the 60 fps from the G9 and EM1 MK2 the best that is currently available.

The Canon solution would cost another $1,000 with unknown compatibility with 60 fps focus bracketing.

It's only pointless if you've never had the same problem.  This attitude of "plenty of others get good results, it must be something you're doing" is disgusting.

In 2019 Canon CEO said in a interview he expects the camera business to decline 5% every year for the next 5 years. Not the kind of thing you want to hear from an executive of a company you hope will spend R&D dollars.

I disagree.  In the case of this thread it is the photographer and not the lens.  Most times when in a thread like this it is the photographer with the occasional bad copy of a lens.

Here is the sharpest I got from a sequence of 44 shots.  I'm not perfect, so I can believe I might not have an optimized technique, but 1 out of 44?  This is cropped about 50%, resized, and sharpened.

for that slow of a shutter speed?  that's about right, especially with a lens that light.

This is cropped about 50%, resized, and sharpened.

A very nice photo. Plenty of people would hang it on a wall. Good color, pretty bird, nice framing and composition.

For me, only the best one counts. What would I do with the other 43? What would they cost me?

I'm happy with 43 duds and one great image. In my experience I end up with more than 1 of 44, technically better than this one but it doesn't matter. It doesn't have to be technical perfection to make a nice photo. The PRO lenses are better but sometimes when I prefer not to carry 1.5-3lbs of lens, this lens comes close enough.
