This month with your Nikon 1 - January 2020

Happy new year! Welcome to another monthly thread. Feel free to share your work either here or through individual threads on the forum, whatever you are more comfortable with.

The rules are simple:

  • Add your contribution by responding to this first message in this topic.
  • Change the subject of your message, then embed your image into the reply with whatever you’d like to say about it.
  • If you want criticism/critique (C&C) or technique feedback, say so. It’s generally assumed that you want general feedback, but direct requests make it clearer.

The title of the thread shouldn't discourage you from posting older pictures. Feel free to post anything that you found again in your archives or that you are currently working on.

The old 7.9

This lens, my modified 10/2.8, is the only I still own of my original lenses, the other came later, failed, or have been sold.

Minutes after the sun rose behind the Black Hill, still some morning mist in the air.

Our grand-children David, and his twinbrother Kevin, love yogurt, with some cereals, not common children food in Thailand, and not served at home, as yet, anyway! Hua-hin, Thailand.

After the party January 2020
1

My enthusiasm is still with the revived Nikon V1, in 2020 either.

We had a new year party with the granddaughters, it was really fun. This is the next morning after-party scene, i think it's not that bad.

I read a comment from a mate in this Nikon 1 forum, that the photos coming from Nikon 1 cameras look as if they were taken with film. Definitely I share his/her opinion, there is a charm in these low resolution photos, and these are perfectly fine for social photography.

No offense, but this sounds kind of like a backhanded compliment. While the line topped out at just under 21 MP even the 10 MP bodies are not what I would call "low resolution". Would I try to print a billboard with one? Of course not, but I wouldn't hesitate to print a large photo to hang on my wall. I think their potential is better than just "fine for social photography"

My only award winner was taken with 10M Nikon V1 in 2014

Hmm, actually the only occasion when one of my photos was awarded in a national competition was with a photo which I took with the Nikon V1. The requirement was minimum 8M images. The photo was printed in 23.5 x 16" and hanged on the wall of the exhibition.

A 10M photo taken with V1, my only award-winner photo from 2014.

On the other hand, Paul, with all my respect, if my preference were high IQ, it wasn't the Nikon V1, I'd use. This doesn't mean that fine art cannot be done with V1, sure it can. For example the grand prize winner on the competition I mentioned above was a photo that was taken with an inexpensive 8M, 1/2.35" Olympus point-and-shoot camera.

I revived my V1 and I use it again with great delight, and the photos look great on facebook, or printed, no problem.

This is how I see, Paul, I love your photos and your enthusiasm, and a number of other great people in this community likewise.

Using the V1 at higher ISO in B&W renders almost exactly like Tri-X. I just love it!

Mallards and Great Blue Heron
2

One of the first photos I have taken so far in 2020. We had an uncommonly-warm Winter day in my area yesterday (January 1). I couldn't resist the urge to walk around a nearby park and photograph birds. Towards the end of my walk I saw this group of Mallards, perched on a sunlit log, intermittently preening themselves. A great blue heron decided to drop in nearby and enjoy a few rays as well.

Happy 2020, everyone.

The moments after sunset have been pretty spectacular at my home lately.  This is 4 shots with the V1 and 10-30 that are stitched together using Hugin.

Just past sunset

First Shots with my "new" J3
2

A couple of shots of a waterfall here in Brazil, that I tooked with my recent bought J3, with the 10-30mm and the 30-110mm. I really liked the compact size of it, but I do miss a wifi feature. Overall, it's a great camera!

Green Butterfly

Both pictures are straight from camera, with a flat color profile.

I really like both of your pics. The butterfly looks great ! I didn't realise the J3 had the 14 Mpx sensor - same as the V2.

I know what you mean about wifi or the lack of it. I used to think I didn't really need one but just recently found it handy to be able to transfer images across from another wifi equipped camera to my phone by wifi and then to the cloud.

I just wondered if a wifi enabled "eyefi" sdhc card might work with the Nikon 1? - I might give it a go with my V1 wifi link to iphone - I have got an eyefi card somewhere which I used to use with an oly em5(mark 1) and it worked OK then.

If it works I'll probably post just for general interest.

Yeah, is a 14 mpx, I really liked the photos. I doesn't compare with my Canon T6 but is close enough for most of the things. I don't know if it is the initial "crush" with the camera, but I can see me using it more, specially for it's size.

The eye-fi idea is not bad. I didn't have any previous experience with it, but I'm a bit concerned about the battery life impact. Does the wifi on it keeps always on? Or since the J3 is eye-fi ready it has a smart function to detects when is not in use? It's not too expensive, I'll give it a try!

Thanks for the tip!

I used to use Eye-Fi when they were new, and as far as I remember it only transferred a low-resolution image, not the full image, but that probably have changed!

There are other cards with the same function, though.
