G5X Mk II - moving focus point on screen - don't want it to ...

I can't figure out how to stop the focus window from moving around. I do NOT want it to go to the point I just touched on the screen. I want it in the center of the screen and want it to stay there, even if I touch the screen.

Searched the big pdf on the Mk II and couldn't find it discussed.

Anyone?

The topic appears to be "Touch and Drag AF," according to the Canon Advanced User Guide, which methinks is the same guide you found.

Try Shoot menu page 2, and scroll down to "Touch and drag AF settings,"

Select "Disable."

I'm not sure this will turn off Touch AF, but it seems to be the only reference to touch focus that I could find.

Hope this helps...!!

Augsburg, I've tried several sites that talk about the GX5 Mk II, and have not received a fix that only addresses turning off the movement of the focus rectangle. I received several suggestions on how to turn off touch control of the entire screen - but, I like touch control on the rest of the screen, so that's not a solution for me.

Curious as to  why nobody who owns this camera has answered the O.P's question??

Don't own this camera but on my M50 there is a small star button on the upper right and just below is a cross marked button.  If this is held down for a couple seconds it shifts the focus box to the center.

Also I have found that if my screen is facing out my nose will move the box off center.  Nose focusing is the new thing.    I now keep it turned in and all is well.

Re: G5X Mk II - moving focus point on screen - don't want it to ...

Thanks Don, that would be a nice to have feature on my GX5 Mk II, but it does not.

I bet this could be programmed into a firmware update. Does anyone know how to contact someone at Canon who might actually have an interest in customer feedback?

I guess I'll just have to touch where I want the focus point to be when it moves around, like everyone else. I just wish the damn thing wouldn't move when I didn't want it to. Can't lock the entire screen, I like the touch screen - that's why I chose this camera over the Sony equivalent (which doesn't have a touch screen, I still don't understand why Sony wouldn't include it as a feature).

Thanks DPREVIEW for the helpful replies.

The fact that the all points focus and tracking are lumped in to the single mode is probably the problem here and the only other mode is the small or point centre box.

Canon have shown little interest in improving the focusing facilities on these compacts so feedback would not really serve any purpose as no one would be around. The contrast detect focus development department is deserted and full of cobwebs most of the time as they are all partying and enjoying the good life in the dual pixel section.

Too bad, I guess Canon doesn't make enough money off of their P&S cameras to fine-tune those cameras. I wonder how the camera lines compare to each other in revenue?

Still, does anyone know how to at least contact Canon with questions and suggestions?

First, I believe the option Chaplain Mark mentioned only applies to the ability to touch and drag on the LCD to move the focus point while looking through the EVF. I do not think it affects the focus point while using the LCD to compose, but at least it includes the option to adjust the touching area to avoid accidental nose focusing.

Second, I'm curious. You mentioned that you find the focus point moving when you touch the screen, as designed, whether you want it to move or not. I'm not clear as to why you would be touching the screen if not to move the focus point. Is this accidental touching? The only touch functions I'm seeing other than moving the focus point are the bottom left option to engage touch shutter (which I don't think I've ever used) and the top right function to open the quick menu, which I launch by pressing the physical button. If it's accidental touching, I feel your pain, as this does happen occasionally for me as well, but I do use the touch focus option intentionally more often than not and it is actually one of the main reasons I like having a touch screen.

In M, Tv & Av modes, try this: (1) on shooting menu 5, set Touch & drag AF to "Enable". (2) on shooting menu 6, set AF operation to "One Shot"; and set AF method to "1-point AF". (3) when shooting, drag the white focusing square to desired location on screen (also works when using right eye with EVF); (4) press "Set" (using either touch screen "Set" button or "Quick Control" button).

To fine-tune the focus, on shooting menu 7, set AF+MF to "Enable".  When shooting, once you've set the white focussing square, press the shutter half-way, and while holding it, use the control wheel to fine-tune the focus.  This provides good control over focusing.  For details, see p 157 of User Guide (post firmware update v. 1.1.0)

Hope this helps.

The UK site if you follow this link and select 'Question about a product' and you put in the product has a 'suggest improvement' as a category down the line.

I still wish we could get a fix for this. I just gave up hope and automatically touch the center of the screen to relocate it when needed.

It's still a great camera and I do use the EVF a lot, especially on bright sunny days.

To me, that is really the number one flaw of that camera... great otherwise, but I have focused what felt like a thousand times already on something at random (after touching the screen). Really an annoying omission.

Canon, are you listening?

The suggestion is correct, it works.

The instruction manual is lame, incomplete, not especially helpful with advanced settings.  Notice that "focus" is not in the index.

Re: G5X Mk II - moving focus point on screen - don't want it to ...

Does anyone know how you focus when using the EVF? Not only does my nose frequently bump it out of place even though the main screen is supposed to be turned off when I have my eye to the EVF, but I can't figure out a simple way to adjust the position of the focus square. As far I can tell you need to tap the focus square on the main touch screen and then you use the directional function of the dial around the Q button to move the focus square. But I lose control of the focus button as I half press the shutter to make sure the focus looks right and sometimes for no apparent reason.  Also I find it difficult to control

the dial while my face is up to the EVF without moving the camera. My bigger camera allows you to set one of the back buttons as a focus lock which might help the situation, but as far as I can find in the manual the G5Xii doesn't offer a focus lock as one of the function choices for the back buttons. Am I somehow missing a simpler way to do this?  I love this camera in all other ways but at this point focusing through the EVF is such a headache it gives me a headache!

Re: G5X Mk II - moving focus point on screen - don't want it to ...

The simplest solution is to move the focus point around with your finger on the screen while the EVF is on your eye. You can avoid nasal focusing by limiting the active touch area to the right or left half of the screen, depending on which eye you use. This option is on screen 5 of the shooting menu.
