Re: So I had an Interesting Experience Recently....

Reading the first part of your reply had me thinking you would love the EM5.3, seems you are already thinking that! It is the approximate size of the EM10 series and very light weight. Honestly, it is my “most perfect” camera. I have Sony FF along with the EM1.2 but the 5.3 is really a great all around camera that is very easy to take with you anywhere in any  weather. Combine it with good glass or even the “lowly” 14-42EZ which, as you have found, more than does the job. I just wish it started at 12mm.

Re: So I had an Interesting Experience Recently....

Bruce, I have both 14-42 EZ and 12-50 macro. The 12-50 is a remarkably versatile lens, light and weather/dust resistant.

Obsolete but not forgotten

The idea of one camera and multiple lenses dies hard.

I like three GM camera bodies each with a lens attached.  This gives the flexibility of not needing to change these lenses in the field, common batteries, and each camera backs up the other two without any of them being a backup camera.

In fact “real” pro shooters have been doing this for years.

The GM5 provides a full system camera complete with a quite workable evf unit and all at a size disadvantage of no more than a pack of cards per body.

In fact three GM5 camera bodies are arguably not larger than just one regular size (even) M4/3 systems camera body.

I don’t really think that the market was really quite ready for a GM-size systems camera body that provided a suitable equivalent to much larger camera bodies.

We still think that very small cameras must necessarily be sub-standard and priced per gramme weight.

Yea, I tried the 12-50 but my copy just didn’t inspire me, I ended up selling since I rarely used it. I am hoping the forthcoming 12-45 f4 Pro is truly compact.

Mine seems to do a pretty good job. Not perhaps as good as my FTs 14-54 MkII or 12-100, but certainly very acceptable, specially in macro mode.

e.g.

Rosa, at iso 6400

The only thing that’s dying, are your GM camera’s. It seems that these days, if people want small, they’ll just use their phones. The only way a lot of people would consider lugging multiple bodies around, with the associated costs involved, are those that are being paid to do so. At this point in time, I can’t see a single, competent body, and a selection of small, light and excellent lenses being replaced efficiently and economically any time soon. That’s where m4/3 really kicks goals

Yes, very nice! It’s just that I have too many choices and it was the odd man out. I have the 60 macro and multiple other lenses that cover the 12-50 range.

My kit is usually only two lenses...

EM1 mkii with 12-40 and 40-150 Olympus pro (if space is  limited I'll take the lumix35-100 F 2.8)

Except on rare occasions, that's all I'll ever need.

My 3 lenses kit

Before the recently purchased 15 f/1.7 and G85, my standard kit set was:

Full gear: GX7 or GX85 (depending which camera will be used by my wife), 7-14 f/4, 12-35 f/2.8 and 45-150 (total weight: 1.18Kg ~ 1.16kg without battery);

Lightweight setup: GX7/85, 7~14 f/4, 12-32, 45-150 (total weight: 0.95Kg ~ 0.93Kg).

Now have GX7/85 be replaced by G85, and added a not usually useful 15 to the above  (added 170~180g extra weight). The above give me an FF eq AoV of 14mm ultra wide to 300mm telephoto.

All could be packed into a camera bag designed for 1 dslr + 1~2 lenses.

I like to keep it small

Sony and Oly bodies with Canon tele lenses

So the idea is to keep it light and small. Tripod and monopod as well go of course.

All the best.

Pen F with...
2

My smallest, lightest, 3-lens kit is:

  • Pen F with Peak Design wrist strap
  • M.Zuiko 12mm f/2
  • Leica 25mm f/1.4 (sans the awful lens hood)
  • M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8
  • ThinkTank Mirrorless Mover 20 bag (very small)

Yes, it could be much smaller if I were to seriously reconsider size:

  • Olympus OM-D E-M10 MkIII
  • M.Zuiko 14-42mm EZ
  • Lumix 20mm f/1.7
  • M.Zuiko 45mm f/1.8
  • A bag maybe 30% smaller than the MM20

I like the kit I have because the body and lenses are top-notch for image quality and I have highly useful lens speed. I have been known to substitute all 3 lenses and just take my M.Zukio 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro. But that's more like a slower 6-lens kit (12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 20mm, 25mm, 40mm).

The two-lens kit allows more options for bags. And less weight to carry, which is good for the neck and back.

And it really requires thought about what you plan to do, as anyone who uses only one lens will attest.

I have to say my Oly 12-40 2.8 is my "fail safe" lens, which covers most subjects I want to photograph.

It teams well with the 75 1.8 or 60 mm macro. If I know I'll need the extra reach, I'll swap one of these lenses for the Oly 70-300 zoom

2019 has seen me add the Panny 15mm 1.7 and the 42.5 primes to my arsenal so I'm going to challenge myself on my next street photography trip, adding the 75 1.8 as a 3 lens kit

Re: Three lens kit

My kit depends on what I'm going to shoot.  If portraits, then em1.2 with grip (grip is always attached), PL 12-60, 4/3 SHG 14-35mm f2 and 35-100mm f2, plus 2 Godox flashes, Godox X-pro transmitter, portable backdrop, 2 light weight light stands, 2 different sized umbrellas, and tripod.

If just out for a day and doing landscapes and whatever wildlife might pop into view:  same camera, PL 12-60, and 4/3 50-200 f2.8-3.5 swd.  And I may throw in a 1.4 TC and 2.0 TC.  Tripod, too.
