RF 70-200 f/2.8 makes rattling sound when being shaken

Yesterday my RF 70-200 f/2.8 arrived. When I took it from the box, I found it made rattling sound when I gently shook it. Looks like the floating lens element for IS are movable even when it's disconnected from the camera.

I know some rather old lenses with IS do make rattling noise when being shaken, but I'm not sure this is true on this newly released lens.

So for anyone who also have this lens, is this reproducible on your copy? I'd appreciate if you can tell me.

BTW, I haven't put it on my camera because my EOS R is still on its way.

It is also possible that it's caused by the AF design. I believe that Nano USM is similar to most other brands' linear motors and that these need power to fix the elements in place.

Better question is why are you shaking your lens around?

Solution:
Don't shake it.

What I have found is on some larger zooms that if you remove the lens from the body while power is on, you can get a rattle.  SO turn off the camera before removing the lens.

I just checked mine. In the closed position I did not notice any rattling at all. I didn't vigorously shake it but did move it up and down as well as flipping it over a few times.

However, I  usually remember to turn off my camera before removing the lens so it was probably shut down correctly. You might want to put the lens in the camera and make sure it's functioning and then turn it off and remove it to see if that changes things.

I didn't shake it intentionally first. I just opened the box and took out the lens, and I felt some parts of the lens was trembling. I wondered if any component is movable so I gently shook it. Then found the problem.

Of course I know this. But the point is that I found the problem before I got the body.

Yesterday my EOS R arrived. To make sure that this problem is not caused by improperly shutdown in the factory. I put it on my camera, turned on the camera, took some photos, shut down the camera. The problem persists.

One more small point you have to wait at least 5-6 sec after you turn off the camera to dismount the lens.  The R keeps the IS on for 5 sec after you turn it off.

I did wait.

I just made contact with a local authorized store of Canon. They tried this on their sample copies and the problem also exists. The problem is reproducible when you hold the lens vertically with the front element facing up then gently shake the lens. But when it's placed horizontally, being gentle shake won't make any sound.

Hey guys. I found the "problem" can be reproduced on sample copies in my local store. And most importantly, it doesn't affect my use. So I'm not going to call it a problem. Thanks you guys' responses.

Just a generral rule, reminded in every manual: lenses with IS, you have to turn off the camera before unmounting , it will lock IS motors

I just shook mine. It does make some noise and you can see the floating IS element wobble around. I tried to shake it really hard (like while running with the lens in a backpack) and the noises stay the same. Doesn't sound alarming to me. It must be designed to do this and last for decades. When I turn the camera on the sound and movement is less as the IS unit is powered.

Don't Shake an EF100 L Macro (!)

If this tendency to rattle troubles you, don't try shake-checking all lenses.

My EF 100 L Macro sounds terrible, as do other examples of the lens that I've checked (four or five) but the ability to make noise does NOT effect its ability to make images...

A long-time Camera shop owner tells me that the 100L is one of the few L lenses in which the "stabilizer doesn't 'park".  I'm not certain if that's accurate, I'm just repeating the claim. Maybe your new lens is the same design?

Turn off IS and camera for storage

I heard that Canon said to turn off the IS on the lens to park the moving IS parts.  That this should be done prior to long term storage or for shipping.  Rumor?

Re: Don't Shake an EF100 L Macro (!)

Exactly!! The 100 Macro is scary sounding. I have detached it without turning the camera off while the IS is still whirling. That even makes things more loose and rattly. If you let IS come to a stop things get a little more solid sounding, but I thought it was broken when I first got it. One noisy lens.

With the RF70-200 it doesn't seem to make a difference, I don't believe it has a P
