3-D is for tinkerers

I enjoy looking at stereos, mostly my old slides. I have not yet graduated to digital because the offerings are few and I yet have found a desirable viewing system. No, I do not own a 3D capable TV and they are not available. Projection system seem a hassle...and do not fit my needs either.  I guess prints for the time being..

But I am heading down a path this week to again trying out a pair of (not too costly Panasonic models w lenses) and a rig fitted with old parts I collected. I got them as close as I can for now.

Inter lens distance. When I worked on these two, the closest seems to be 75mm which I thought a little too far. Then I measured the Fuji that I have had for a while and lo and behold they too are 75mm........I have yet to decide about shutter releases, I am told I will need a resistor if I try to meld two cables...anyone know?

Not sure why I fret over this, a little more depth is always good, eh what?

Happy holidays to all in depth...gs

Two GX 7 Lumixes and two 20mm Lumix lenses.... with a jury rig if there ever was one

If you make a cable release that connects to both cameras just use diodes to isolate them from each other. I built a 3 camera panoramic rig using Coolpix A and a custom cable and it worked fine. Just be sure you put the diodes in the right direction or the shutter release won't work at all.

My dual camera rig using DXO Ones. 65mm between lenses.

Nice rig.  65mm bases gives only a limiting depth

If I want more flexibility I have this too.

Which gives the option of 32mm, 65mm or 96mm.

Hi Gerry

I am a retired electronic design engineer ( who does 3d images as a hobby ).

In my career I designed control electronics for VCRs and I am familiar with this type of control.

Here the basic diagram showing the resistor values in the remote hand unit as used by panasonic cameras such as the G9.

To operate two camera at once with one switch the circuit dia below will need modifying.

The method I have in mind will require addition a two n-p-n transistors and a re-arrangement of the parts shown below. If you feel you want to build such a circuit

I can sent another message with a drawing on it.

I appreciate that.

I have two hand held separate releases.

One is the OEM Panasonic cable with button and the other is a Vello model with a attached cable, which is also available separately for RF model, and both have that 2.5mm mini RCA plug so beloved of Lumix in those days ,  G 9 has space and assigned a 3.5 mm jack.   But the Gx 7 I had and the duplicate set cost ca $600.00  used.    I am sure other twin rigs must have a similar functionality, and your diagram makes sense to elex folks for sure, me kind of maybe...

I could easily cannibalize the Vello, not costly, and get the cables, also not costly. The parts and soldering is not something I have done, but am willing and kind of able....low voltage I ken, household voltage I do not mess with Gerry

3D no glasses displays do exist.

Do a search on looking glass. Not sure if you can use simple 2 image stereo photography for this type of display (since it's based on light field technology) but still it's cool.

Re: 3D no glasses displays do exist.

I am fine with glasses.   I have no clue as to how a holographic light process works without laser taken content...Thanks, always something, eg lenticular has its place , but is a niche for all time. Vectography was once available and in the offing, but that was Polaroid based and never took off...too bad it was also cool.

I am content with the available methods.  Namely the old Holmes viewers of cards,  free viewing and the MPO two image displays that are used for separate polaroid or field sequential viewing .

Actually, the viewing part is doable, only the lack of currently available digital means combined with Polaroid.  Except currently for Epson etc projection.  We are at a pause point.  But not for ever.  I am following Brian of the UK on London Stereoscopic Company.  As to anaglyphs, I discovered them in the '50s.  They are acceptable.  For some, as good a presentation for the masses as needed. Me, I seek the full color displays of my two image chromes. But in modern form.   Darn LG for giving up just when they had it knocked.

Light field, may be cool....and unreachable on a mass basis.  NASA fits that one I think
