GX9 - is it normal that the IBIS "rattles" when camera is off and you move it?

Hi there,

I just upgraded my trusty old GX7 to a GX9. I did not expect this to be such a big jump to be honest, but 5m into using it, I knew I was going to keep it.

When I open the box and handled the body, I could immediately hear that something was rattling inside. When turning it on, it goes away. When I take of the lens now, you can actually see why: the IBIS stops and you can actually see how the sensor starts to wiggle around. So if you move or shake slightly the body, you can hear it clunking around.

My question: Is that normal? Do others have the same?

The GX7 only had rudimentary IBIS, so I cannot compare. However, my Lumix S1 has excellent IBIS and nothing rattles whatsoever when off.

I haven't noticed anything off in handling whatsoever tbh. Focus and IBIS works fine, also in conjunction with stabilized lenses. Just trying to reassure myself that I don't have to send it back to Amazon for replacement.

Thanks!

Can't speak for the GX9, but my GX80 also rattles when off. Turning the camera on powers up IBIS (I suppose) and the rattle is gone.

Both my GX9 and G9 do this. Seems to be normal.

The greatest "rattler" is a Sigma 60/2.8 mft lens

The sensor is just loose in there till powered up and then a series of electro magnets pull it into its static operating position. nothing to worry about.

I figured, I just didn't notice the same on the S1, which left me wondering. Thank you!

Page 13 of the G9 manual says this, so I think you have nothing to worry about:

"If you shake the camera while it is turned off, its sensors may move or a rattling sound may be heard. The sound is caused by the In-Body Image Stabilizer, and this is not a malfunction."

With these more expensive models they probably can put in systems to hold things steady when off as these rattles do alarm people. Stabilisation buzz, aperture clack all cause panic. The cheap sigma lenses I have had with their linear focusing just seem to run free on the sliders when off and can make a massive rattle without any apparent harm, but the more expensive stuff probably locks up.

WHAT??? Read the Manual???

What a novel idea!  It's a shame so many ask questions rather than find answers themselves!

"When all else fails, RTFM". Some (most?) people really feel that looking into the manual is the absolute last-ditch effort.
