G7 or GX85

A friend of mine is a hunter (elk, deer ). He is just getting into photography. For whatever reason, he has settled on a G7 with 2 kit lenses on sale at a local store. The lenses are 14-42 and 45-150. I know that is probably not the best lenses for wildlife, but has he decided to go with that combo, partly because of price. I don't know much about MFT, but I think the GX85 is a more current and capable camera for wildlife shooting. Just my opinion. I see B&H or Adorama has the x85 for the same price as he can get the g7 for. Also he will be shooting stills, not video. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: G7 or GX85

Ask him how long he's spent hunting in the rain. If it's a lot, he might be better off with the GX8.

Great question.  I would go with the newer digital camera because of the IBIS or DUAL IS.  it's one of the best stabilizations on the market.  Thus, it will help greatly when shooting telephotos at wildlife hand held.  The G7 may not have the same stabilizaiton ability as the G85 or GX85.  Thus, my choice would be the one with the best stabilization.

Also, for wildlife a telephoto zoom like the 100-300mm would be best for the long shots.  150mm is a great range that covers a lot of situations like airshows, large wildlife close up, and BIF early morning.  And 150mm is about the limit I can hand hold smooth panning video and get slow shutter photos.  But having a lens that can reach out 200mm or more would be the best for wildlife.

Anyway, I hope this helps.  Good luck on your new venture.
