Banding is fixed in Firmware 2.20
28

Before I updated my camera I took an underexposed test shoot, and I took the identical shot after. Even though Nikon didn't mention it in their release notes, the difference is quote obvious. I wish I took more test shots, but I didn't expect a change to be honest. Anyway. Here are 100% crops of firmware 2.1 and 2.2 . Looks like they did more than CFexpress support to me. It's a drastic difference.

Firmware 2.1

Firmware 2.2

I should mention this was a 3 stop push with the shadows lifted at 100 (maximum) in photoshop. No noise reduction was used. Very happy with the result.

Where's the banding in the first image? I don't see any banding in either.

You need to look at it on your computer. It’s there.

I am looking at it on my computer. Where? In the black bar?

When I've had banding it's either been from lighting showing a stroboscopic pulse or banding from severe underexposure in the blacks - much more visible than anything I see in your picture. I'll look again though.

I didn't see it until I opened it up at 100% (and yes, it's in the black bar).

It does look like the banding is gone.

It's pretty obvious in the photo even with the small size.

Just pinch to zoom on your phone and it's plain as day.   Another hidden firmware improvement!

Nice, the noise looks cleaner and more uniform too.

Re: Now - what does Firmware 2.20 do?

According to the Nikon guidance, compared to 2.10

  • Added support for Type B Sony CFexpress memory cards.
    • Note: For information on the license for the open-source software included in the camera’s NVM Express driver, see “BSD License (NVM Express Driver).

Nikon mention nothing else.

EDIT - no update yet for D5, D850 or D500.

In lots of ways good photography is much more about how equipment is used rather than anything else.

I am a bit confused by this too.

On the page that preceeded the firmware is says this from November:

Eye AF Improvements, Control Ring Update11/21/2019 Z 6, Z 72.1Firmware Version 2.1 for Z 6 and Z 7 improves the performance of Eye AF, adds a new function to Nikkor Z lenses with Control Rings (ISO Control) and adds support for DX-format Nikkor Z lenses with built-in VR.

That wasn't what I thought happened a month ago, and now today's just talks of CFE support.  Odd

Banding IS gone (almost). This also confirms Nikon DOES bug fixes under the lid.

Both pics raised 5 stops in C-NXD.

Z6, FW V2.00 vs V2.20

See my post here on how banding can manifest/not-manifest from shot to shot even with the exact same scene and shooting parameters. This throws off a lot of people when testing whether or not banding has been fixed in a new firmware rev.
