I upgraded from a K-3ii to a K-1ii and love it, and was surprised that even aside from vignetting that some of the APS-C lenses do quite well, since it's not just vignetting that makes a difference. And of course I wear out Goodwill getting good old film lenses.

But then a funny thing happened. Tried to sell my K-3ii and didn't get the price I wanted, then found I kept dragging it out in some situations where I preferred it, especially for wildlife shots. And now I've gotten all half hearted about selling it, and instead have only loaned it to my traveling buddy. It's hard to say that in the real world the K-1ii is that much better all around, or vice versa.

So yeah, I'd hang in and see what happens next.

Thanks! I just found out an old family friend died and I'm getting some kind of a windfall (I barely knew her so that's odd but whatever!) so when I see how much that is I might pull the handle or whatever.

Hi all, title pretty much self explanatory! I have a K3 and a K3ii with 9 lenses, most of them APSc. If i bought a K1ii and then waited to recover from the cost before slowly going FF on the lenses, is there any disadvantage using the K1ii with APSc lenses compared with using the K3ii or K3 cameras designed for APSc?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Phil

There are two "disadvantages", IMHO. One is the size and weight of the K-1ii compared to the smaller and lighter APS-c bodies. The other is the 15 MP files resulting from the K1ii set to APSc format vs the 24 MP from the latest APSc Pentax.

I think there is another disadvantage; one that one might consider minor or not so minor.  When shooting in cropped mode on a FF camera with an OVF, it's more difficult to see the details of what you are shooting because the entire photo is contained in the small rectangle in the center of the viewfinder rather than the entire viewfinder.  In some situations it could maybe be a plus because one can see the surrounding area, but I generally find it to be more of a strain.

I've never used a mirrorless with an EVF but my guess is that a FF mirrorless shooting in crop mode could still fill the entire viewfinder with the photo being taken.  Correct me if I'm wrong.  I still like OVF though.

50-135 can only be used at the long end.

Then don't look at the work of almost any wedding pro that shoots medium format. I took a class about starting a photo business from a big time wedding pro in the Mid-Atlantic area. He never had to advertise by that time, he was booked a couple of years in advance. Once I got a look at his work and what it took I decided weddings were not my thing. His work was right up there in the range of my brother's architecture and landscape work. So I stuck with motorsports.

Yes on a EVF the viewfinder is totally filled up with the crop mode (EOS R, in my case).

???? Lots of APS-C lenses, perhaps most zooms, won't really cover the full frame sensor, but you can certainly still "use" them. You can use the 50-135 over it's entire length in FF mode but lose corners to vignetting at the wide end which, in turn, can be lightened and reduced by a small crop for a very good center-focused shot at around 30mp. It is a bit worse in that regard than the 60-250, but both are still suitable in FF mode for centered subjects, things like portraiture. IMHO, for an APS-C lens it is still useful on the K-1 and the only reason I don't use it more is that I prefer the 60-250.
