Disadvantages of K1ii with APSC lenses?
1

Hi all, title pretty much self explanatory! I have a K3 and a K3ii with 9 lenses, most of them APSc. If i bought a K1ii and then waited to recover from the cost before slowly going FF on the lenses, is there any disadvantage using the K1ii with APSc lenses compared with using the K3ii or K3 cameras designed for APSc?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Re: Disadvantages of K1ii with APSC lenses?

What lenses do you have at the moment ? Many aps-c lenses are totally compatible with FF, some are almost compatible (minor vignetting).

Your K3 has a higher pixel pitch than the K1..... 24MP squeezed into the aps-c sensor compared to 36MP into the FF sensor.

If you depend on wildlife and crop extensively, I would say stick with K3. If not then go for the advantages k1 and K1II has

First off there would be little to no disadvantages other than not using the full sensor and getting less resolution...

However how about you list the lenses you have and we tell you if any of them can actually be used as a FF lens despite its designation

Re: Disadvantages of K1ii with APSC lenses?

Sure! Let's see if I can remember them while here at the office!

Pentax 10-16mm f3-4.5

Sigma 18-50 f2.8

Pentax 50mm 2.8

Pentax 35mm f2.4 (if I remember correctly)

Samyang 85mm 1.4 (FF, I believe)

Pentax 100mm Macro (FF, I think)

Pentax 60-250mm f4

Pentax 50-135 2.8

Oh, Rokinon 14mm as well.

I think that's all of them! Some of the specs may not be perfect but you get the gist!

Thanks for all the help so far. I appreciate it.

you should de baffle it, with care, is pretty simple. I did it. ( dont use a dremel ! )

Pentax 10-16mm f3-4.5

This is the 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 and it should cover the FF image circle near the 17 end

Sigma 18-50 f2.8

Most likely APS-C only

Pentax 50mm 2.8

This is a FF lens if its the macro, if its the 50mm F1.8 then yes it too covers FF

Pentax 35mm f2.4 (if I remember correctly)

This lens cover FF

Samyang 85mm 1.4 (FF, I believe)

Yes its FF

Pentax 100mm Macro (FF, I think)

Yes its FF

Pentax 60-250mm f4

you should de baffle it, with care, is pretty simple. I did it. ( dont use a dremel ! )

There are instructions for doing this on pentaxforums

Pentax 50-135 2.8

Definitely APS-C only

Oh, Rokinon 14mm as well.

I think that is FF too

Wow! I have a lot of FF options it seems!

The 50mm is the macro! That's great.

I found https://www.pentaxforums.com/articles/photo-articles/how-to-modify-da-star-60-250mm-f4-full-frame.html in case anyone else is looking.

Re: Disadvantages of K1ii with APSC lenses?

This de baffling looks scary. Is it OK to just remove the baffle or do I need to modify it? I guess I would need to modify at least or, ideally replace it?

Thanks!

You can remove it completely, however there was a review that suggested a replacement performed better, I believe you can buy the replacement from someone who has 3D printed it but since I don't own one I never bothered to look them up. don't go beyond what you're comfortable with, and if you're comfortable cropping out the worst of the vignetting then don't worry about it.

as far as i remember i havent read anyone complaining of quality issues after de baffing it. I did it and improved a lot for astro as there is much less vignetting. So i would say you can just remove the baffle, i wouldn't modify it. When removing it, and assembling it back take care to not bend the contacts as otherwise AF will not work ( in case it happens you will need to open it again and place them properly.

Yeah. I think I'd just create an 'action' in Exposure to crop, at least until I got my nerve up! Could be a very VERY niche service someone could offer!

but is extremely simple. It took me around 5 minutes. Just try to take the time specific for that as if you are doing other things in the same time you risk loosing screws or some other issues.

Re: Disadvantages of K1ii with APSC lenses?

OK. I might give it a go assuming I ever buy a K1. I think I'm going to wait for the new APSC flagship to come out and see what the specs are like on that. Maybe. Or maybe a use K1 or K1ii would be a better move. I don't know. I've been happy with APSc all these years. Would I just be blown away by a FF? Not sure!

Re: Disadvantages of K1ii with APSC lenses?

Whatever people will pay me to! Weddings, portraits, real estate, product but, for myself I like nudes and landscapes (and nudes in landscapes). I feel like I might keep using APSc for a lot of stuff but FF would be great for my portrait and some of the wedding stuff (the wedding stuff that is more like portraiture!) Currently I use my Sony RX10iii for the shots of people dancing and so on at weddings because it is just so good and no one ever complains "that's a one inch sensor, YOU NOOB!' and the extra DOF is nice for fast moving subjects.

Pentax 10-16mm f3-4.5

Sigma 18-50 f2.8

Pentax 50mm 2.8

S/b FF

Pentax 35mm f2.4 (if I remember correctly)

FF or very close

Samyang 85mm 1.4 (FF, I believe)

FF

Pentax 100mm Macro (FF, I think)

FF

Pentax 60-250mm f4

Baffle vignettes at some f stops and focal lengths, but overall works well FF, about 90+ %.  I have not modified mine and use it regularly for portraits, live performances, etc.

Pentax 50-135 2.8

Oh, Rokinon 14mm as well.

s/b FF

Even those lenses that are not FF will often give a large enough clean image circle to warrant using FF.  Given your selection, I'd suggest going for the K1 and the astoundingly good DFA 28-105 which will give you lots of time to play with your other glass.

Interesting. And would you advise going for the K1ii or getting the K1 and using the difference for lenses/food for my family?

Phil

I was an early K1 adopter and did not do the Mk II upgrades as they seemed minor for my primarily landscape shooting, not enough to warrant the $500 difference. Of course, that also means I have no informed opinion on the changes or their relative value vs. the price difference. The DFA 28-105 is abou5 as good as a "kit" lens gets - great, clean rendition from which I've printed very big with zero issues. Always feed the family first . . .
