Landing in Fujifilm land... but...

Hello evryone.

I just land in Fujifilm looking for a sustitute for my Samsung NX30. I think X-T30 is a good camera so I give a try and acquire one.

In general I'm happy with the images I get, but there are some things I really don't like.

It's probably that some of this things can be solved with config adjustments, but I don't find how yet.

Here we go:

- Time to review after take picture. It's configurable (0, 0.5 and 1.5 sec.) but only works in LCD screen, not EVF. Viewing through EVF just after I take a picture inmediatly return to 'live view'. I have to push play button to see what I recent pictured. Very annoying. And what is worst, the play button is in the opposite side of my right hand and is not at reach of any finger while composing / reviewing through EVF. (I have reconfigured the back dial push action to play, to aliviate a little this whole issue)

- Self timer. I't cannot be configured to take more than 1 photo. In my Samsung NX and Lumix G85 I can have 1 or 3 (configurable) picures after timed out, this is very useful to have more choices to get the better picture of group or myself.

- EVF items diffiers from LCD items. It's suposed to look at EFV and see the same things that in LCD, but it's not what I get. The most annoying is the lack in EVF of the scale of focus in manual focus mode. If this is configurable, it have to be an option to copy config from LCD to EVF and viceversa.

- The Q button placement in the thumb rest. I have to disable this button because I end activating it every now and then.

- The menu doesn't recall last position. Every time I push menu button it takes me to "My menu". This is useful certainly, but it's tedious if I want to try the effect I get changing values for certain parameter. It's supposed to be fun to try and learn different things you can do with your camera.

- Multiple exposure. Multiple? It only allows TWO. Lumix can do unlimited basically.

- In AE Lock mode the focus point cannot be changed. Why you will lock AE if you can't change focus point? You're locking exposure, not focus.

I would like to solve this things that are important to me. Please if somebody knows about it, let me know.

If not, perhaps I'll move and try something else, like Nikon Z50, or some other alternative.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day.

This is uncanny... I too have hit all of these issues and tried to google solutions, and came up empty handed. I basically treat all of these as bugs, the most annoying is, by far, the "review" functionality... even when it works, it's not even a real review, because "delete" button (the only button that matters when you're reviewing) is stupidly disabled.

There are other issues too, like film simulation bracketing producing multiple RAW files for no reason, or Fuji's inability to create proper presets (only some settings are honored, others are not), the implementation of the `q` button is just insane... my list of annoyances is long. Thank god for the physical dials, because the software-driven settings are a mess.

I am not even talking about uploading pictures to your computer in the background (impossible) and the broken mobile app.

So yeah, Fuji cameras have a high number of quirks/bugs in their software, and I'm just assuming they'll iron them out over time.

On the bright side, Fuji cameras come with the best RAW converter in existence, CaptureOne FujiFilm Express, so you get better output than Lightroom for $0 and you don't have to run Adobe malware in the background.

I don't think switching to another system makes sense, because nobody can hold a candle to Fuji glass, in my humble opinion, if you measure everything by the pound. I'm going to tolerate buggy firmware instead of going back to 400g+ lenses boasting 12+ elements attached to 650g+ bodies so I can produce 50+ megapixel files to have an option to print at enormous sizes which I would need pretty much never.

Fujifilm cameras are pretty "modular", you can set them up however you wan't to. To get the best experience (as with every other camera), you'll have to dig deep into the manual:

http://fujifilm-dsc.com/en/manual/x-t30/

I don't own a X-T30, but the menus are similar to my X-T3. I'll try to answer some of your questions:

- Time to review after take picture. It's configurable (0, 0.5 and 1.5 sec.) but only works in LCD screen, not EVF. Viewing through EVF just after I take a picture inmediatly return to 'live view'. I have to push play button to see what I recent pictured. Very annoying. And what is worst, the play button is in the opposite side of my right hand and is not at reach of any finger while composing / reviewing through EVF. (I have reconfigured the back dial push action to play, to aliviate a little this whole issue)

There is a button next to the viewfinder. You can circle through different display modes, my guess is that you are in "EYE SENSOR + LCD IMAGE DISP.". Switching to "EYE Sensor" shoudl do the trick. Check page 14 of the manual.

- Self timer. I't cannot be configured to take more than 1 photo. In my Samsung NX and Lumix G85 I can have 1 or 3 (configurable) picures after timed out, this is very useful to have more choices to get the better picture of group or myself.

Switch to mode CL or CH.

Never noticed a difference between the symbols in the EVF and LCD. You could try do deactivate the "Large indicators" for the EVF. Page 199 in the manual. I Don't have my camera with me right know but maybe this will help.

- The Q button placement in the thumb rest. I have to disable this button because I end activating it every now and then.

I've heard that this is an issue with the X-T30. I though they put in an option to deactivated it or put in a timer  with a firmware update.

- The menu doesn't recall last position. Every time I push menu button it takes me to "My menu". This is useful certainly, but it's tedious if I want to try the effect I get changing values for certain parameter. It's supposed to be fun to try and learn different things you can do with your camera.

Jup, as soon as you activate My Menu the camera will always open the My Menu dialog. I am using it and setup my most used items there. Maybe this changes if you deactivate my menu.

- Multiple exposure. Multiple? It only allows TWO. Lumix can do unlimited basically.

Never used multiple exposure mode, but I can say that it is locked to two pictures. Looking through the manual, there is no option to increase the number. Are you sure you are not confusing this with bracketing (e.g. for HDR pictures)?

- In AE Lock mode the focus point cannot be changed. Why you will lock AE if you can't change focus point? You're locking exposure, not focus.

There are a couple of menu options for this, one is somewhat hidden in the "FUNCTION (Fn) SETTING". I think the AE lock button defaults to "AE/AF lock", change it to "AE LOCK ONLY". Page 204 in the manual.

I would like to solve this things that are important to me. Please if somebody knows about it, let me know.

If not, perhaps I'll move and try something else, like Nikon Z50, or some other alternative.

Yes, this option does the trick. Retinking this issue taking into account the interface design philosophy, it makes sense. CL for 5 shots in rapid fire, its more than enough.  Left to see how works with flash.

Thanks.

Yup, you are right.

At this moment I got a right 'review' in EVF thanks to @Powie (EYE Sensor option), but while reviewing the delete button doesn't work. Fortunately I can shot again at any moment interrupting the review with shutter release.

I'll delete the bad pictures later.

There are other issues too, like film simulation bracketing producing multiple RAW files for no reason,

ahh.

Well, with my Samsung comes Lightroom for free, and works very well with NX30, so no differences here. True that version of LR is old, but it's free for those NX cams, no suscription mode and enough for me.

I don't think switching to another system makes sense, because nobody can hold a candle to Fuji glass,

(I have to google for that phrase )

I'm not sure if I need premium-grade optics (APD versions, for example), but at par or better than Samsung it's enough for me (better than Canikon kit, IMHO). I was very happy with 30mm F2.0 for example. Even I would like to test Viltrox for Fuji, perhaps will perform good.

in my humble opinion, if you measure everything by the pound. I suppose you are talking about going full frame. At this moment I'm not considering such switch, but do considering APSC Nikon Z50. I think you feel aliviated to come to Fuji from FF.

Thank you for reading.

Yes, just set the DRIVE mode to CL, CM, or CH (continuous low, medium, or high) and it'll take several pictures.

- The Q button placement in the thumb rest. I have to disable this button because I end activating it every now and then.

Yup, this is VERY irritating. I have the same issue with the XT30 and have disabled the button.

That's a well known and annoying implementation of AE lock in all Fuji cameras that I know, and there is no solution so far. The suggested setting is not the solution. With "AE lock only" you can refocus but can't move the focus point (as you reported). This makes AE lock unusuable to me

Wow, yes. This works. I'd read the manual, but I didn't understand the implications of such functions.

This is useful to me.

Also, there is one of my favorite options: Lcd off and EVF on only with eye sensor. This saves battery.

+0 to Fuji. Other systems have this too.

- Self timer. I't cannot be configured to take more than 1 photo. In my Samsung NX and Lumix G85 I can have 1 or 3 (configurable) picures after timed out, this is very useful to have more choices to get the better picture of group or myself.

Switch to mode CL or CH.

Yup, this works. 5 shots in CL.

This works, BUT not with flash. In Samsung NX and Lumix G85 each shoot can fire the flash if this is on. There are some delay between shots, but even that is useful, so group people can pose better and have the feedback of flash.

Yes, the "Large indicators" for EVF hidden the focus scale. Good to know. Now I always use "small indicators".

Focus scale even show the deep of field depending on lens aperture. Great!

+1 to Fuji

- The Q button placement in the thumb rest. I have to disable this button because I end activating it every now and then.

I've heard that this is an issue with the X-T30. I though they put in an option to deactivated it or put in a timer with a firmware update.

My cam comes with latest firmware and it have the option to deactivate the Q menu. Lately, I back to activate it again and try to get used to it.

I get used to this. Now I don't activate Q by mistake, and I find useful this menu.

+0 to Fuji

This is useful certainly, but it's tedious if I want to try the effect I get changing values for certain parameter. Yes, If My Menu have items, is always showed up first.

Without items (My Menu deactivated) does not remember the last menu used, always go with the first menu, but does remember the last option in the menu.

Never used multiple exposure mode, but I can say that it is locked to two pictures. Looking through the manual, there is no option to increase the number. Are you sure you are not confusing this with bracketing (e.g. for HDR pictures)?

Yes, only two. hardcoded.

Nou, that doesn't work. Already in AE Lock Only, and cannot move the focus point. Perhaps unlinking the focus point from metering point would work, but I like to have linked.

I would like to solve this things that are important to me. Please if somebody knows about it, let me know.

If not, perhaps I'll move and try something else, like Nikon Z50, or some other alternative.

Thanks for reading and have a nice day.

Thanks for take the time to answer including manual pages.

Tanks for your hints.

Other things I find in this period using the camera:

To be 'good hybrid camera' it's not so easy to change between photo and video modes: I have to turn the mode dial several clicks to change to one or another mode, using the right hand while grab the camera with left hand, and have to take my eye off from EVF. In a parade I miss several shots because of this. It could be good to have a lever to change mode, or a direct record button. The pro is that it keep the settings separated for each mode.

The touch screen limited opeation. Changing focus spot while viewing in EVF is not so responsive. In play mode there are no touch 'buttons' to delete or interact or process the photo. In play video mode, it is more limited, I cannot go to a random position in video, change the volume (without pausing), etc...

Reviewing photos or videos and pushing delete button is annoying due the location al left, while my right hand pases over eye sensor in EVF.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks again.
