M5 vs M50?

I've been using a Rebel T2i (with Tamron 18-270) for a few years, plus a Canon SX50 for lighter weight and birds.  We'll be doing some traveling in the coming year, so I am thinking of something lighter than the Rebel-Tamron combination. I don't like the tiny SX50 EVF and controls (always hitting the 'Self-Timer' button by mistake) and I do like the idea of a larger sensor, so I'm turning to the Canon mirrorless M series.  I'm an exclusive viewfinder user, so that means M5 or M50.

In the United States, the M50 is always bundled with the kit 18-45 lens, not the 18-150 as in Europe.  But the M5 is bundled with the 18-150 in this country, and the price of that bundle is coming down ($600 now at B&H; is the M5 being discontinued)?

The M50 is said to have a better processor (Digic 8 vs Digic 7) and about double the number of AF points.  So am I giving up a lot of capability with the M5?  I do like having more controls on top, and not buried in menus.

I could of course get just the M50 body and buy the l8-150 lens separately, but that dramatically increases the cost.  Or I could get the common US bundle of 18-45 plus 55-200, but that means more lens switching (and more to carry).

Coming from the relatively old T2i, I'd probably find either the M5 or M50 a new experience.  But I'd welcome any thoughts re one versus the other.   /LEJ

You must be stalking me   Exactly my delema as I wanted something better than recently sold off SX70 and my SX50.  I went for the M50 with the kit 15/45 lens.  Then added the 55/ 200 lens.  I agree that changing lens is a real negative but seems to be a necessary evil.

The kit lens has been just ok but hardly a winner.  The 200 is much better.  I am hoping for a good super zoom "do-it-all"perhaps in the 18/ 300 with reasonable size.  It may be a long wait.  Overall I really like the M50 bod.

Re: M5 vs M50?

I sold my M100 and bought BOTH the M5 and M50.  I like them both.  My M5 is more solid and has a few quick change buttons.  I don't see any real difference in IQ.  I admit to mostly shooting static scenes, so they may differ in tracking.  If $$$ are a concern, I recommend the M5.  If you want/need the fully articulating screen, then the M50.  I use the viewfinder, so the screen doesn't matter much.   For me, it's a toss-up.

I keep the 55-200 on the M5 and an 18-150 on the M50.  When I want my 22mm I use either.

When I use an EF or EF-S lens with adapter, I choose the M5, because it is more solid carrying the extra weight.

Very interesting!

Do you notice much (if any) difference between the M50 and M5 as a result of the newer sensor and AF in the M50?

Nothing I can see.

I have both - and the M5 now just sits on my shelf. The AF on the M50 seems better, the EVF seems a little less contrasty and I like the rotating LCD much better. It also feels a tad lighter in my hands.

At first I wanted to get the M5 but then the M50 was introduced and chose it instead after reading the reviews.  Metal vs plastic so I chose the plastic.  Also got the original M (blue model) when it came out.

ergonomics are better on the M5 if you like hands on control. the differences in features aren't that much between the two.

the greater AF surface is only 6% top and bottom, on only some lenses.

The 4K in the M50 doesn't allow for AF using DPAF.

the M5 bundle with the 18-150 if you get it at the same price as it is showing for B&H is an insane deal.  the 18-150 is a cracking good lens, and that combined with the 11-22 makes an amazing travel kit that can handle just about anything.

It's discontinued at manufacturer level; that's what I meant, so is discontinued for the whole world.. Still available at some vendors, but that's existing stocks. It's discontinued, though.

Actually the M5 is plastic as well (I have both) but I prefer the M50's user interface in terms of the amount of control available via the menus - it is also isn't prone to occasional unexplained sluggishness, which my M5 seems to be.  The M5 does of course have more physical controls and "feels" posher due to the expanded use of leatherette covering, but I do prefer the M50 due to its user interface being more customisable and things like having the exposure metering timer back for single AF use (instead of only getting to see the exposure metering whilst it is already locked by a half-press, as on the M5).

Any particular reason, other than 'newer'?

The link to the flickr page shows a lot of M5 photos; they look fine.

Canon have said so. They have said it has been replaced by the M6 II.

"Canon" has never commented on it.

Canon USA (who really isn't "Canon" and has no say on development) mentioned something about it yes, but that's not the same as discontinued at the manufacturer that's something entirely different.

Canon has seemingly quietly discontinued it this past week though, which is entirely unrelated to comments in september from someone in Canon USA (who also gave conflicting information to other people).  Canon's inventory isn't 90+ days especially in Asia.

amusingly your answer was right, but for the wrong reasons.

I would never take all that much notice of Canon USA on this sort of issue; they're very good on the technical side, but a lot less accurate on global marketing strategy etc., pretty much anything they say is limited to the US market. Which is what they're there for, but not so helpful for reading the global intentions of the company. This was particularly evident in the early days of the M system, where a lot of people misunderstood what Canon were up to globally in large part because of Canon USA's comments about M in the US market.

However, this was said by Canon UK, who have a track record of being 100% accurate on  such issues*, as anyone who has studied Canon over the last 25 years and knows some of the people involved would know.
*Mostly because they don't make such statements without clearing them, or at least fact checking them, with Japan first. They're very careful to be accurate, and incredibly precise in their use of language; so when they say camera Y replaces camera X you can be certain that means camera X is discontinued either now or imminently. What you cannot be sure about is that there will never be an X Mk II, or a Z that is a closer fit to X than Y is.
