Full HD Video Editing Hardware Requirements

i have had a D7000 for ages, but so far I’ve only - well, almost only - been using it for stills photography. Now I’d like to get into videography a bit more seriously, but I wonder if my current computer is up to the task of editing and rendering/encoding Full HD videos. Like my camera, my PC is a fairly old affair, but so far it’s proven adequate for things like raw image development and photo editing.

It has an ASRock FM2A85X Extreme 4 motherboard, a quad-core AMD A8-5600K CPU with integrated Radeon HD 7560 GPU, plus 8 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM. My impression is that video editing works fine, but rendering/encoding causes the APU to overheat. It also takes way too long to encode and save an edited video, even when the processor doesn't get overheated to the point of shutting down the computer.

Do you think getting a better CPU cooler and possibly doubling the RAM would solve this problem, or should I also get a dedicated graphics card complete with its own fan? Also, what's better: getting more RAM or installing a second SSD and designating it as a "scratch disk" / virtual memory for the video editor?
(When replying, please bear in mind we're talking about editing videos from an almost ten-year-old camera, with a maximum resolution of 1080p, frame rate of 24fps, and a typical bit rate of less than 20Mbit/s.)

There is no reason a computer should EVER overheat under any load if installed properly. Did you overclock it? What cooler do you have on it? Does the case have ventilation? Is it plugged with dust?

The times where there isn't thermal shutdown, it is probably thermal throttling in an attempt to stay cool, which is going to cause bad performance.

This is not a high end CPU by today's standards, but it should be able to edit 1080p. You are probably looking at maybe taking 2-2.5 minutes to output 1 minute of video best case, though.

100% you need to figure out the cooling situation. Make sure your case is clean and has airflow. THen check that your cooler is not loose and the cooler's fan is spinning. If it is still overheating then you may need to replace the cooler and install it properly with thermal paste.

No to both They will not likely help very much.

Likely neither will help significantly. RAM is only helpful if you are currently running out of it.

You kind of need brute force CPU to output the video quickly an the motherboard you have doesn't have many options.  I think you could go to a 6800K and gain maybe 15%, but that's not a huge savings.  Just sort out the cooling and I'm guessing that will help quite a bit.

Was this machine home built or purchased?  If purchased, it would be worth it to re-seat the cooler with new thermal paste.  It's been known to fail after long periods of time.  If homebuilt, time to think about a better cooler, although new paste might also help.

Whether or not a GPU will help with rendering depends on both the software and the age of your machine.  For example, my box is old enough that some programs no longer support GPU acceleration.  LR is one of those.

It's home built.
I think the integrated GPU supports OpenGL.
Not sure which programs do, though.

I have tried Movie Maker 10 and VideoPad Professional Video Editor 3.74.
Which software would you recommend?
