Wide angle lens for Canon EOS 500D

Hi everyone,

I have had my Canon EOS 500D for quite a few years and I have been happy using the kit lens until recently as I have become more interested in landscape photography. I am therefore thinking about upgrading to a new wide angle lens to better capture landscapes when I am out travelling.

I have tried to research a bit and it seems many recommend the Canon Lens EF 16-35 mm. F/4L IS USM or the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens for this purpose.

Would you recommend purchasing any of these lenses for the Canon 500D? Or would it be better to go with another lens for this purpose?

Since this would be the first lens I ever purchase, I would appreciate some recommendations from others!

Cheers,

Sara

On a crop sensor camera a true wide angle would be more a 10-20 mm lens.

Regards,
There is always something to shoot/snap, you just have to know how to do it and have the right gear.

Get the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM. It's reasonably priced, and designed for APSC cameras like your 500D. The EF lenses you mentioned are much more expensive, and as they're designed for a full-frame camera, on the 500D they will barely be wider than the kit lens you already have.

Re: Wide angle lens for Canon EOS 500D

I was preparing for a longer family vacation trip to Portugal, I knew we will be visiting and browsing many city's and landscapes. Finally I pulled my wallet for a little bit older but well maintained second hand Tokina 11-20 and found out the F2.8 is a real deal just for any lighting condition.

I had also a Canon 18-135 and the 24 mm pancake in my bag, but the 11mm again proved to be a nicer walk around lens. I am selling now some of my Canon lenses and keeping both the Tokina's, 11-20 and 50-135, both F2.8
