canon sx730 hs

My wife currently has an ELPH with 10X zoom and uses camera on full auto. I see canon has a great deal on a refurb sx730hs. I have been unable to really find much info on the camera.

Any idea if this camera will hit the mark as a Xmas present?

Thanks so much for your replies!

Beware of purple fringing. I recently bought a SX740 HS (similar to SX730 HS) and encountered this problem (and later found Nikon's free Capture NX-D software can remove fringing). If you want to avoid this problem, consider a Nikon A1000 which has slightly less optical zoom (35x vs. 40x) but almost always removes color fringing automatically.

If using full auto you would be better off just getting a newer phone. If not using auto mode the sx730 can take nice photos in good light. Like all small sensor cameras it is limited compared to APS-C and full frame cameras. If taking the small amount of time learning how to use cameras not in auto mode, then this camera and others can be a nice gift. If using on auto only, it's kind of a waste of time and $. Also, 1" or larger sensor cameras will give better quality for general (non-super zoom) use. Here are some sx730 photos for reference:

450' away

dandelion

same shot at full zoom

On tripod, manual focus, jupiter with 4 of it's moons
