Canon 35 mm F/1.4L II USM rattle sound

Hello. I have bought the lens about six months ago (april 2019) . And from box I noticed that focus ring have some play and some rattle sound inside. I'm not shake the lens hard.

At may 2019 i have sent the lens to CPS center to test it. Answer - ok, lens condition is in cpecification.

But, presently i think that rattle sound got louder.

I've create the video:

Sound goes from back lens group. This is my first L lens, i don't know how it should be.

I live in small town without any service centers to check the lens.

Is it normal or not?

Re: I think it’s normal..

Today, i've sent the video to CPS. Will wait answer. I think the answer will "normal" again. But I don't believe, that rattle sound in prime lens (without image stab) is normal. Many owners say that their copies is perfectly made, without any rattle sounds and focus ring play. Strange manufacturing tolerances...

May be someone have experience in  disassembly the lens and can tell me, what part of lens can create this rattle sound?

Re: I think it’s normal..

Mine doesn’t make any noise at all and like you I would be very suspicious if a non is L lens made a rattle...

I have 20 or so L lenses and none without IS make any noise.

Re: I think it’s normal..

I have an EF 70-200 mm f/4L IS USM, which several years ago made a similar sound. In some cases, the images came out a bit blurry too.

It turned out one of the lenses inside was lose.

Re: I think it’s normal..

I have sent the lens to CPS . I've fully described the problem. Week ago,  i have received the lens back. So, the answer is - normal, in "manufacturer specification". I've talk with engineer who diagnosed the lens. His answer about rattle sound - it's normal for this model of lens. He told me, that they fully diagnosed the lens with disassembly... strange....

I think it depends on which bit of the lens you hold and how hard you shake it.

I can hold it differently and there is much less of a sound as it’s shaken.

I bought mine new after seeing its construction on lens rentals blog and the excellent reviews online.

I’ve found my results wide open are great and It’s staying in my bag. I hope you feel happy keeping it.

Hmm. I'm having similar sound with my 24-70 2.8 II. Image quality is not affected tho. I'm about to sell that lens and i'm scared potential buyers won't buy because of that sound.

I don't know how much this is worth,  but my 35mm L II doesn't rattle at all.

Re: Canon 35 mm F/1.4L II USM rattle sound

I've sent my lens to CPS twice in 2019. And result - normal. I think i can't do anything for now. After last diagnostic, play of the focus ring has become much smaller (yes i have this problem too) and tests (Imatest, Reikan Focal) became give good results. For example, before "diagnostic" Focal software results - 5% astigmatism every tests at F/1.4. For now, result is 0.5 - 0.8 % (tested using different light situation) . And I think photos became more contrast. May be disassembly process helped... I don't know. But it's very strange for me, why they (CPS) not fixed the issue, besides the lens was already disassembled. May be it is really "manufacturer tolerance". Or may be fix process required large investments in time and money...

P.S. I've sent the lens to main CPS of my country, not authorized service. They directly relate to Canon Inc.
